Weatherproofing lenses

From the 'bread, this article shows how to weatherproof a lens. It looks like an interesting idea, but I can't help but wonder if 1) it actually works, 2) can you clean out the grease when it gets dirty, and 3) can't the grease seep into the lens and muck everything up, especially if you apply it multiple times?

You probably can't use this to seal around the glass, either.

I prefer to either use weathersealed lenses or rubberband a garbage bag into a rainshield. This looks unwise to me.
