Re: Samsung LCD TV - LNS4051 power on problem

Sat Jan 31, 2015 11:31 am

I have a Samsung Model LN40C530F1F that will not power up. The relay does not click. The red LED light just blinks when I attempt to turn it on with the remote. I pulled the cover and inspected the power board. None of the capacitors are bulging or leaking. I replaced the two 1000uf capacitors anyway but no power. Is anyone familiar with other components that can cause this issue?

I have a different model but also a Samsung who has similar issues.

Unfortunately, mine is a bit older, and Samsung told me they couldn't help me because the warranty has been expired.

Have you found a solution for your problem because I would love to know what it is?

Not sure if I responded on this thread as it is an old thread that won't die.

I also have a Samsung 50" that was given to me years ago (CFL backlight) due to this same issue.

I was able to crack it open and replace 4-5 capacitors that were visibly bulged. The unit turned one 100% normal and worked great for about 3 years until now. It started doing the same thing over the past 4-5 months, slowly getting worse. Sometimes it would only take it 2 minutes to come on, now it takes it about 10. Once "warmed up" it can come in fine if turned off and back on.

It seems like a bad circuit design that allows for the capacitors and possibly other components to become damaged over time. But in my experience they can be replaced with a soldering iron, caps and a little know how. 30-40 minutes of your time and 5 bucks worth of caps.

It's threads like these, which has become a Net-wide resource to fix common problems, that proves the utility of the forum concept.

That said, back when this was a hot issue, I merged a whole lot of baby threads into this one.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

For all those of you that don't have bad caps. I recently repaired an LNS4051DX that someone had discarded. The unit would turn on but no image.

The caps looked like they had recently been replaced by higher-quality equivalents but still no image. I read a similar comment about the little black box on the bottom left that sends the high-voltage lines to the back light. Someone mentioned when they pressed down on it ( personally I wouldn't touch that thing with my finger) they heard a buzzing sound. After inspecting the underside of the board closely. I noticed that one of the two leads to this module was cold soldered ( it looks like there are serious cracks in the solder, enough that it would probably move if the board was slightly flexed). I resoldered the lead and plugged everything back in. The TV immediately started to work again.

Even though this thread is very old, it did help me in locating and fixing this particular problem so, I thought I would spread the knowledge.

Thank you to all that have posted their stories.

Unless you have a 1080p plasma, with the rock bottom prices of new TVs the old ones just ain't worth the trouble and money repairing. Even if you could replace bad caps the backlight is still a weak point in all these LCD TVs.

And BTW, don't run the backlight at max all the time if you want your TV to last past the warranty period.

Would it still be a problem on current TVs with LED backlighting? I tend to game at maximum brightness (either by my own accord, or forced by HDR mode).

Hi.

A friend has the dreaded clicking TV but will not power on. Don't know if it would've eventually turned on, we left it for ~20 minutes with no effect.

A quick Google suggested the PSU Caps had gone. So I took it apart.

Note - I can't post links, so I've copied the relevant info into a table below.

I have identified the capacitors as Samwha WB Series

Noticeably the 4 1000μF 25v caps had definitely blown (see photos), so these were replaced with what we had on hand - Jamicon SK series.

The 5 1000μF 10v caps "looked" OK, so were left alone.

This didn't fix the problem - but the TV did now turn on eventually.

So I ordered higher voltage rated, low ESR Panasonic FM caps, and replaced all of them.

Note: In between ordering and fitting the caps, the TV lost its picture, but still had sound.

After replacing the caps, the problem with clicking still persisted - but after about 15 minutes the TV did turn on and the picture resumed.

Now I did have some issues with regards to physical size. According to the WB datasheets I should've been OK, but I didn't physically measure the cans. Additionally, the only parts lists I can find online, without paying, suggests a different series of capacitors, namely Samwha NXB datasheet relevant section of parts list replicated below)

As you can see from the table, the Jamicon's were woefully inadequate - no impedance data, much lower ripple, lower temp (at a considerably lower frequency (120Hz vs 100kHz)), and a lower lifespan. The Panasonic's, on the other hand, have lower impedance, higher ripple, and higher lifespan, all at the same temp. and frequency. I also picked the next voltage up to decrease stress on them.

What has annoyed me is the spec sheet of the WB claims the 25v to have a 12.5mm diameter. The NXBs recommended by the parts list have a 10mm diameter. The WB 25v caps I removed have a 10mm diameter! As the 35v (and 25v for that matter) Panasonic FMs have a 12.5mm diameter, going by the datasheets I thought they would fit, but they've been a tight squeeze.

Nevertheless, they are all fitted. Yet the TV still took ~15 minutes of clicking before it turned on. Could it be a bad solder joint on my part? Or something else?

The TV is now mine and I'm not giving up on it yet!

After the last time it turned on, it lost the picture again. I'm still certain it's the caps, and my next course of action would be to replace the 4 x 47 μF 50 v Samwha RD series, however, I've been doing some more digging - for a start I managed to find the service manual, but the block diagram layout shown is for a smaller screen model in the same series.

Doing more digging found the same IP Board used by some other Samsung TVs, which in turn has lead me here.

I am going to attempt turboroe's solution (see quote below) - but as per other comments in this thread I will short the pins with a screwdriver.

According to what I found on JustAnswer

Hi

these are the repair tips for your tv

-check capacitors CS804, CS805, CS806, CM812, CM813 (all 1000uf/16v)

-Tip for appliances using the BN94-01206D signal PCB. (Relay clicks slightly faster with a NVM corruption problem. R1131 and R1132 (both 68R) have visible signs of overheating. 13V is measured at one side of these parallel-connected resistors (while relay is on) and 1.2V at the other side. 210R is measured across C1102 (1uf/16V), in line with the 2 resistors. if C1102 is removed then only 37R can be measured . Replace C1102 (with 25V type), R1131 and R1132 (both 68R) at the underside of the signal board, next to connector Cn1101.

-(Electrolytic capacitors in PSU have been replaced). NVM memory IC1803 (AT24C256) has corrupled software. then replace NVM memory IC1803 (AT24C256), then proceed as follows: switch of appliance via mains switch, then solder two long wires at PIN 5 and 6 of IC and short them at the other end, then start TV via main switch, wait maximum 1-2 seconds ( a click can be heard, backlight doesn't switch on), the remove the short circuit at the two wires. NOTE: it is important not to exceed the time limit(1-2 seconds), otherwise the procedure will have to be repeated, then access service mode (INFO, MENU, mute) . select 'tuner' line and set it to 'AUTO' . then select RESET line. the set should reset itself and upon start-up, it should start automatic search.

Samsung LCD TV Clicking or Not turning on walkthrough:

Main Problem: Popped low quality power board capacitors

Solder in new capacitors (the medium 1000uF next to the power board<->main board connectors. preferably 35V).
I strongly recommend swapping ALL the 1000uF ones for new - better quality - ones.

If TV still doesn´t turn on: EEPROM memory values are bugged.
Q. Why does this happen?
A. When Tv is plugged in it attempts to read EEPROM and reads some bad data, then resets (probably due to the Watchdog).
Note: Data gets corrupted because of the power board capacitors problem.

Solution brief:
- disable EEPROM chip to prevent TV from resetting (following steps 1, 2 and 3)
- manually set correct values to the EEPROM (following steps 4 to 10)

The EEPROM chip:
type: ATMEL 24C256 - small 8 pin IC surface mount (must be 5mm x 3mm)
location: on the bottom side of the main board

search google for: atmel 24c256 datasheet
download the datasheet and check the pin numbers

1. Short out the eeprom pins 5 & 6 ( the two pins that connect to resistors ).
The easiest way is to carefully solder a thin wire (about 6" length) to each of the 2
little round pre-soldered pads that lie in front of pins 5 and 6 and use the wires
as a contact breaker to easily shorten the pins.
2. Turn on the power - Instead of the usual noticeable relay click, you get a faint click,
the backlight stays off, nothing else happens.
3. Wait around 1-2 secs ( anything longer than this NEVER seemed to work ).
4. Remove the short.
Note: by now the TV is already in normal standby operation, but EEPROM values are still bugged.
5. Press the service mode key combination on the remote control.
Note: check service manual for the correct combination or try the following:
* info, menu, mute, power on) - In that order individually, one at a time.
* mute, 1, 8, 2, power on) - In that order individually, one at a time.
6. TV should come on with noise picture and then the service menu (press Source if it is difficult to read)
7. Immediately go to option Adjust and turn OFF the watchdogs
(especially in case your TV keeps turning off by itself at this point)
8. Now, for EVERY OPTION in ALL THE SUBMENUS, change EVERY VALUE and then change it back (toggle right-left)
to assure the EEPROM data is re-written correctly.
Note: To enter some submenus you have to press the right arrow instead of OK button.
To return, press exit.

Some values will still be currupt, though, and you will have to guess the right
one or consult the service manual for factory defaults, such as Panel vendor,
Memory vendor, panel type, etc.
But the TV will still work anyway, maybe not with the best image.

9. Go back to Adjust and turn back on the watchdogs.
10. Finally, Set TUNER to AUTO and then go back to root menu, goto RESET and select it
by pressing the right arrow.

Note: I recommend keeping the wires soldered to the EEPROM chip. You may need them in the future.
Just remember to tape the ends to prevent a short-circuit with the chassis.

Other thoughts: If your TV is clicking but still turns on after a while, I STRONGLY suggest you immediately stop using it and swap the power board capacitors at once before your EEPROM data gets bugged.

Well that hasn't worked :(

Couldn't short with a screwdriver due to location, so pulled out my brand new micro soldering iron...

Did the job quite well, but alas, shorting the pin hasn't solved the clicking relay.

Voltages seem fine.

Checking by shorting pins 2 and 5 (Power On/Off and STBY6V) on CNM01 I get

6.09v on pins 5,7,8,9,10 (STBY6V)
12.04v on pins 13,14 (12V)
5.4v on pins 19,20,21,22 (5.4V)
12.66v on pins 27,28,29,30 (13V)

All stable.

Bit concerned about since of the underside of the main board - not allowed to post links yet, so can't post photos.
