Hey! That's a nice addition to Nikon's lens line. It'll set you back $200 when it becomes available.

Hey! That is a good lens! $200 on release means it should dip to $150 or so after a while, right? Sigma 30mm can suck it :D

I hope this means an updated D40 is coming out soon at the same price range, with a higher dynamic range.

I was just coming here to post about this very thing. I had a slight cringe when I saw this, seeing as I got the Sigma 30mm seven or eight months ago at double the price. Of course, I get a slightly wider aperture, and it's not like the Sigma suddenly stops being an awesome lens or anything...

Anyway, this would be an excellent pairing with a D40. I've become addicted to running around with a fast normal lens, and pairing the 35mm with a D40 would make a very small, cheap, and handy package. I say Nikon's gotta keep this trend going.

Looks inviting! Not too bad of a price, I bet it can be bought for $150 - 175 shortly after release...

As soon as supply is good. Look at the 50mm f/1.4 AF-S... It's nearly double it's MSRP right now because everybody wants one.

Not a bad deal, but Im a little leary of the DX lenses. At some point full frame cameras will come down in price & as Nikon only has one type of mount, unlike some (Im looking at you cannon), I dont want to rebuy lenses. With that said Im eagerly waiting the D90 prices to slip before joining the DSLR ranks.

I think pro level DX lenses don't make any sense. However, this is a cheap lens. It fills a very big hole in the DX lineup. Now Nikon just needs to catch up to canon with a better DX ultra wide.

Eh, I think DX cameras and lenses will be around for quite some time. The smaller sensors will always be cheaper, and there's a major benefit to a smaller and lighter camera.

That said, if you suspect that you'd be swapping up to Full Frame in the future, even if it's five years from now, then it's a good idea to try to maintain a collection of FF lenses. There's always the option of shooting in DX mode, but I could see how some people would cringe at the thought of not using all their pixels.

EDIT:

Nikon only has one type of mount, unlike some (Im looking at you cannon)

Does Canon maintain multiple mounts? I know they completely switched mounts in the late '80s for autofocus lenses, but I thought their previous mount was just plain discontinued.

I think he means that crop lenses won't work on full frame cameras. At all. They won't do crop mode like Nikon full frame.

I don't really consider a $200 lens as much of an investment compared to the cost of good full-frame glass.

200 bucks is well into the "cheap and light" arena. Particularly if it's notably smaller than the 35/2 it's pretty attractive for that role.

It should be extremely light. It would look downright funny on a D300 with grip.

EF-S lenses (of which there are 7 currently available) for crop bodies will not fit on full frame cameras. EF lenses (of which there are 54+3 currently available) will fit on either crop bodies or full-frame cameras.

I thought that the announcement of this new lens was a great step. It fills a significant hole in Nikon's AF-S lens lineup. As for it being DX... the full-frame cameras all have motors to drive the old AF lenses (of which there are 21 currently available), so they don't have to have just AF-S lenses (of which there are 30 currently available) for autofocus. Nikon's offering what, 12 or 13 DX lenses now?

Makes sense to me. There's something to be said for a fast, middle-of-the-range prime if it's small and cheap enough. I used to have an 50 mm E series (all manual) that was smaller and lighter than a lot of teleconverters (I think I have a 72mm polarizer that weighs almost as much). I never minded carrying that thing around as an extra lens when traveling with my various F cameras (and because I rarely carried a flash and my zooms were slow, it got used a lot).

I got one of these gems for Christmas, here are my thoughts.

- Well built. The first thing I noticed about this lens is how nothing on the outside is connected to glass. There really is nothing that seems like it would break.

- The focus is accurate and fast in low light. This is where the kit lens really failed me. The flash exposure is great, but it was hard to get a focus lock in low light.

I've mostly taken pictures of my drunken family and friends so far, and it's perfect! F/1.8 FTW.

Pics or it didn't happen? :D Nah, that's awesome. Stop wasting time talking about it and go shoot with that thing, man!
