I was just wondering what type of panel does the average LCD television use? I did a few quick searches and couldn't really find anything about it.

Could be IPS, TN (these are mostly found in the smaller units), or one of the *VAs. Depends on the price point and the manufacturer.

I believe LG is the only company as far as i know that uses IPS panels. You don't hear too many companies advertising what sort of panel they use because i'm sure the average consumer wouldn't know the difference anyways, only that x > y > z. So thats probably why they all stick to TN and don't budge.

TN also gives the fastest response time (though that spec is both inflated and over-emphasized) which does sometimes get advertised (and some consumers look for it, usually because they think they're better-informed than they actually are). And yes, most TV panels are TN.

Panasonic LCDs are IPS variants.

Samsungs are usually one of the *VAs.
Sometimes the same Samsung model can have either a Samsung-made panel, a CMO-made panel, or a AUO-made panel. Each uses their own flavor of *VA panel tech.

With manufacturer's starting to produce 240Hz HDTVs, I would have to believe that a good portion of them are TN panels, since those are the only one's I've seen get down to the 4ms response times that would be required. Walking around Best Buy the other day, and realizing this fact, I was impressed with the viewing angles that the TVs had, and began to wonder why viewing angles on TN-panel based monitors are so horrible in comparison.

That's pretty much your answer why.

Not all of them are actually refreshing at 240Hz.
