The deed is done. Amazon's Rebel XS starter kit jumped to $499.00 from $449.00 while I was waiting, but in the meantime, they got this in stock for $499.95, which includes the spare battery and tote bag I would have bought anyway. I also picked up a UV filter -- research suggests benefits are mixed, but it's cheap enough to experiment with.

We shall see how that starts out...

Pros:
Protects your film from UV exposure
Provides some protection for the front element of your lens
Easier to clean than the front element of your lens

Cons:
Your digital SLR isn't vulnerable to UV, anyway.
The kit lens isn't all that valuable, anyway
Adds another piece of glass between the sensor and your subject (which can increase flaring, especially if the surface isn't multi-coated).
