Color Calibration Questions

I have three monitors hooked up through two video cards. Two of the monitors are Dell (one is the Dell 2209WA, the other, I'd have to check, but was purchased years ago). These two are connected through DVI to a Radeon HD 4770 512MB Video Card. The third monitor is an old Samsung connected through a relatively cheap nVidia card.
Yesterday I tried to calibrate the three with an X-Rite Eye 1 device. I generated three ICC profiles, but I'm not sure I see any differences. To be honest, I'm confident I'm missing an obvious step because I'm new to color calibration.
I know having three monitors may complicate matters. I'm using Windows 7 and found instructions on setting default ICC profiles for each monitor. I'm going to the Color Calibration section in the Control Panel and setting the respective ICC profile for each monitor. But looking at the same wallpaper on each screen, there are obvious color differences among the three (particularly between the Samsung and the Dells which I suppose can be expected).
Is this a lost cause considering the different manufacturers/different video cards? Is there a limitation set by the video cards? By Windows 7? Should I even expect the wallpapers to display similarly?
Please let me know if you have any advice, resources, or require additional details.
