Transferring MiniDV to PC?

Bit of a noobish question, but I borrowed a Panasonic MiniDV camera and shot some footage, now i'm trying to upload it. I tried using the cable I had, which is a Mini-USB to USB cable, that didn't work, WinDV didn't recognise it. So I googled around, and apparently you need a Firewire cable for video

So I found one on Amazon, is this the right type of thing? Also I need a Firewire card.

It looks right, but I thought i'd just double-check, don't want to buy the wrong thing.

one other thing to check is the Capture function from Windows Movie Maker which should show a source if it detected anything, but I'm pretty sure you're right about needing the firewire cable.

You can't borrow the cable from the same place you got the camera? I'm pretty sure the camera came with it.

You might try the manufacturers web site and download the owners manual for the camera and read how they recommend it.

My (canon) MiniDv camera uses usb for still photos only, and you have to use either composite, component or 1394 for video.

I use a pinnacle 700 usb to get around having firewire to pc. Being able to control the camera from the 1394 connection is nice.

Sometimes tricky getting computer to recognize camera.. can be finicky as to when you turn camera power on and whether or not you are in "playback" mode.
