Just bought a 2333SW! :D

Postposted on Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:20 pm

This Samsung 2333SW was on sale for $150 at Dell.com this week, and I bought it. I was holding out for the 2333HD to drop to like $240 or so, it's the same monitor but with a TV tuner and HDMI (neither of which I really need, I guess?) but I saw this for $150, and they got me. lol. So far it seems gorgeous. No ghosting, no light bleed, good clarity, no dead pixels, great response time. Any thoughts?

FF, did you mean a link to online review and pics? I could take pics of my own and post them, and write a short review, I'd be glad to. This is basically what I bought:

I am not sure I am not the only one that appreciates that. ;)

Crap I forgot about this....does anyone want me to do a mini review of this? These frequently go on sale as seen on Bensbargains, and at $150, I cannot believe I got a monitor this nice for so little.

Decent price for a TN panel, although not especially rare -- there's a whole selection on Newegg in the 21.5-23.6" range for $160-210 if you're not after the tuner.

Have you directly compared it to any similar panels in that size/feature range?

No, but I don't really have a means to, I've basically only ever used Dell LCD's. Also, at this point I am not educated in the differences in panel types.

Just do it? If anything it should add to the collective gerbil intelligence. ;)

Fair enough. Just curious because I've almost exclusively used TN panels due to them being cheap and large and good for gaming, but did end up with some sort of PVA 19" due to a packaging error for a Black Friday special a couple years ago (box said 1440 x 768, which would have been a TN panel; actual product was 1680x1050 and I later worked out that it was a PVA panel of some sort).

There is some variation between the quality of TN panels on the market, but AFAICT the age of the manufacturing makes more difference than brand or screen size. The benefits of PVA and IPS aren't obvious to the casual user but once you get into digital photo and graphics editing, and see how a photo edited on a TN panel can significantly change in both brightness and color rendition on a better-quality panel, the difference becomes meaningful.

At my workplace some of our drafters and engineers use a panel very similar to yours, though, so they're at least good enough for that in addition to standard gaming fare.

The benefits of a quality IPS or PVA LCD panel over a TN panel are extremely obvious. Just look at your monitor from an angle other than dead-on and you can tell if you're suffering with a lousy TN LCD panel.

I just don't see it. Literally, as I've been using TN panels for primary desktop and laptop displays for about five years now. Letting the perfect be the enemy of the good may be fine for people with expensive tastes and budgets to match, but AFAICT the objections you just stated are irrelevant for the majority of users, including myself up until you and others helped get me into serious digital photography (just finished my first two matting and framing jobs this evening, in fact). They meet the needs of 80%* of the user base, and even from a historical perspective, cheap TN panels are an enormous improvement in every respect over cheap CRTs that people previously worked with.

I don't see why that TN panel are bad or I'm missing the point. I've have mine over a year & never had or have a problem/s with it.

They're not bad- they are incredible for every day computer use, and eclipse what the average 60Hz CRTs used to provide. Great for games, and have very sharp text. They are also exceptionally awful at other, specific tasks- particularly anything that has to do with color work, or anything really dark. PVA panels handle the dark stuff well, and are used in the best TVs (Samsung panels used in their and Sony's sets), and IPS panels are used in the best professional monitors (see NEC).

I'm not an analogy master, but I'm thinking crackers. You know, thin crispy wafers, goes with cheese. Imagine you could only afford some inexpensive off-brand stuff to go with your cheese. You eat it everyday, it holds your cheese just fine, but it perhaps isn't very tasty and has more than a little bit of added cardboard. But, eventually you just get used to it. Then one day you get to eat some Carr's Table Water Crackers with your cheese. Suddenly you not only taste the cracker, but also the cheese tastes better. Sure, you can go back to the old crackers, but you'll always remember that flavor.

However, please don't let us cheese and cracker snobs bring down the experience of the Samsung, though; it's not fair nor kind.
