Widescreen Monitor for Photoshop work

Mon Dec 06, 2010 10:53 am

Dammit. Screwed by Dell. Again. Purpose of this post: soliciting suggestions for a good widescreen monitor for color calibrated work. Cost/benefit considerations appreciated. But first, a quick rant.

I bought a desktop in 2005. I had 3 parts fail and spent the next 3 years with a faulty power supply. No more Dell desktops, I vowed. Then last year, I bought a Dell monitor. 2209WAf. It served me well and then abruptly stopped working conveniently just outside of the warranty period. The culprit appeared to again be cheap, faulty internal parts. Wtf. Seriously.

But on to the point. I need to replace this pos. I liked it a lot, but I am now hesitant to buy Dell again. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for a good widescreen monitor?

My considerations the first time around:

I'm still a big fan of Dell's UltraSharp monitors. The U3011 was on sale for $1012+tax recently. The U2410 is a terrific monitor for under $500. The U2311H is a screaming deal for under $250.

Comparison shop for an NEC SpectraView or a Lacie, and you'll see what a deal Dell offers on IPS LCD panels.

Do I dare buy another Dell though? Any other reports of bad Dell products? Or am I that unlucky?

I haven't had any issues with my U2410. I can't imagine working with a 2209W for Photoshop stuff. The Ultrasharp monitors have 3 year warranties as well.

JAE rings true. The Dell IPS panels are pretty good values.

Otherwise HP has some competitive IPS offerings.

Dell Ultrasharp U2410 is very good, as is the HP LP2475w. Both are wide gamut, although the Dell has a pretty good sRGB emulation mode for standard gamut.

For standard gamut the HP ZR24w is excellent. www.tftcentral.co.uk , www.prad.de , www.anandtech.com , www.digitalversus.com , and www.xbitlabs.com all do nice LCD reviews too.
