A TR Sticky Wallpaper Thread! (?)

Thu May 19, 2011 11:42 am

I know, sticky wallpaper sounds funny. :)

Currently, I'm assuming a lot, since this thread is NOT sticky. I'd like to begin by asking the mods if we could get this thread stickied, or barring that, if an official sticky thread could be created for this.

What I'd like to do:
Crowd-source you gerbils for your favorite desktop/background sites. Make your suggestions down below, and if possible, add a note why this site is good (great game-oriented wallpaper, great cars, support for hexa-monitor setups, etc). Suggestions can be edited back into the top few posts (I think) so that there's a categorized list at the start of the thread for newcomers, and discussions for anyone who wants to dig into it.

While we're at it, I'm thinking good sites for themes/icons/replacement GUIs, would be welcome too.

Good wallpaper sites in general:
Interface Lift
Deviant Art
Wallpaper FX
Wallbase (700K paper!)

Computer generated wallpaper:
Digital Blasphemy (free/pay)
Blatte's Backgrounds

Hi-Res (1920x1200, 2560x1600 etc):
Interface Lift
Desktop Machines (Cars in HD)
Wallbase
Wallpaper FX

Multi-monitor / Eyefinity / Surround:

Cars, Planes, Vehicles:
Net Car Show (OMG so many cars)
Desktop Machines

Anime, Pop, etc.:
Wallbase

Females, Males, Celebs
Wallpaper FX

More categories and sites to come, especially if you suggest some of your favorites!

Re: The TR Sticky Wallpaper Thread!

Why I'm doing this:
My new monitor just arrived, and I've been looking for some new wallpaper to show it off with. While exploring my renewed interest in wallpapers I came to several realizations:

1. Googling/Binging for "Wallpaper" still turns up 1000s of crap sites, loaded with ads, links to malware and promises of beautiful russian brides, sex toys modeled after your favorite anime character's anatomy, and Top100 everything-you-could-ever-want!

2. Site content can be somewhat limited. e.g. InterfaceLift, long a favorite of mine, is heavily photography oriented. Blatte's Backgrounds is all fractal content. My fiancee, bless her heart, decided that some Bugatti Veyron pictures would make for sexy backgrounds, but it's been devilishly hard to find some good shots for that purpose. I'd like for geribls who are looking for specific "types" of backgrounds to be able get some good suggestions in each category.

3. Beyond subject, size matters more these days. While it doesn't need to be 2560 x 1600 to look good on a display with that resolution, I challenged myself to download only WQXGA sized paper and found it difficult. The growth of Eyefinity/Surround vision setups can require "odd resolution" papers, and the absolute boom in smartphones and tablets could benefit from a renewed focus on "smaller resolution" backgrounds (that can also handle a mass of icons/widgets well).

4. Credit where credit is due. As much as I've been staying away from the [H], I discovered they had a handy thread with good wallpaper site suggestions. I thought "That's nice. Why shouldn't we have a gerbil approved, blue-flavored one?"

...

I'll start with a pair of suggestions of my own, I guess. (Repeat suggestions welcome)

Interface Lift - Some very stunning images, available in multiple resolutions (lots of 2560x1600 support). Lots of photography/landscape/cityscape shots

Social Wallpaper - New wallpapers come in, and they get thumbsed up/down to increase/decrease their visibility. Interesting concept with some decent (often pop) images.

Site is good because it has cool computer generated wallpaper.

Could have sworn I replied yesterday. Guess I'm delusional.

I've liked a lot of what I've seen from digital blasphemy. I'm curious, are you a paid member?

No, I'm not a paid member. A shame most of their stuff is pay but they still have some pretty cool free ones.

Ahhh yes, Deviant art. I used to get a lot from them.

Seems like their site is slower with the new design, but damn if there isnt a lot of content. Any trouble sorting it all?

Oh, and that NetCarShow? wow, that's a lot of cars :)

Gonna add a few more of my own:

http://www.wallpaperfx.com/ -> Seems to have a lot of categories (females, males, anime, movie, cars, etc). And lots of filter for things by resolution too.

http://wallbase.cc/start/ -> Well damn, 700k+ wallpapers, a thousand or so just for starwars? Lots of anime, lots of celebs, lots of wallpapers in general. Filters for resolution, and also settings to include SFW, Sketchy and NSFW images. :D

http://www.desktopmachine.com/ -> Desktop Machines. Lots of Cars. Lots of resolutions, including HD/widescreen resolutions.

I went through a big fractals phase. It didnt stick for me though.

And thanks! You'll be happy to know it's already listed up there (Blatte's Backgrounds). Still the same name, right?
