D600 - Where to buy

Thu Jul 11, 2013 4:50 pm

I stumbled upon this store when googling camera stores for a good price. Anyone dealt with this store? Any comment is appreciated.

there was some discussion about this store on dpreview. some say it is a bait & switch shop (i.e. this model doesn't come with a battery or they kept the kit lens). some say they dont bother telling you if stuff isnt in stock. others say they got their stuff. for that price i might pay my money and see what happens. visa seems to b good about fraud refunds. just dont buy any extras or upgrades.

regardless, good luck with the d600. i was shocked how much better it was than my old d7000. iso 3200 is now realistic

That is for an "Import Model" (see the yellow "what's in the box" button). No US warranty.

It makes no mention of there being a EN-EL15 Lithium Battery in the box. All they say is "Lithium-ion Battery".

you can get an en-el15 battery or two for $60 each. the if it is import then you would have to send it to nikon europe. if it work out then it is worth it. newegg has a coupon code out where they are seling the d600 and the kit lens for just over $2,000

I'd wait for Nikon's rebates (usually instant) and get it from a reputable source, or even a local source that price matches. I wouldn't mess around with camera equipment, just too much invested in something you're going to expect to perform :).

Thanks everyone for the replies.
No US warranty is my deciding factor against. I have to look somewhere else.
Newegg is my favorite retailer to purchase PC components so I looked for the "just over $2000" deal mentioned by hiro_pro but could not find it at their website. Is it $2400 with 24-85mm lens?

Are you looking to buy the kit or just the camera?

The 24-85 VR seems like a capable standard zoom, though Ken does dig on the auto-focus briefly (not as fast as Canon, it seems) and the RoHS label meaning that the lens is scheduled for death ten years after manufacture. He's funny like that. And Ken Rockwell links this kit in his review. The SD card and remote trigger probably aren't good values, but the WiFi adapter likely is (and I love the one on my 6D).

I am looking to buy D600 to upgrade D7000. I have FX 50mm/1.4 so I am going to get a FX zoom lens but do not know yet what specific one. Any suggestion for a zoom lens to go with D600 is appreciated. My budget for the zoom lens is up to $1000.

Well, over your budget, but the best standard and telephoto zooms for Nikon are currently made by Tamron. The Tamron standard zoom even has VC, which no one else can do (yet).

So I'd probably advise you to do what I did, which is to get the kit zoom and save up for the Tamron, selling the kit zoom then. Well, I'll probably try to get the Canon telezoom, but that's just because it's seriously the sharpest zoom ever made :).

I should have said Nikon EN-EL15. One would hope that you would get a Nikon battery with a new camera but I'm not so sure with that store.

Presumably, you mean the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD for $1300 -100MIR and the SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD for $1500 -100MIR which both score better at DXO than the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II for $2400.

here is the coupon code from newegg:

15% OFF Select DSLR Cameras*
BTEXNXM55
*Up to a maximum discount of $2,000 per order. No minimum purchase required. Limit one use per customer; may not be combined with other promo codes or combo discounts. Expires at 11:59PM PST 7/14/2013 or SOONER based on fund availability.

the d600 with the kit lens was listed last i checked. go to newegg and search "ppss15OffDslr." use the code BTEXNXM55 when you checkout.

just to clarify my previous comments. there are many things i might buy generic but i would never buy a generic lithium battery. i played that game before and can confirm the nikon batteries hold a charge longer, take more pictures per charge and last years longer than generics. go to B&H and get nikon en-el15 batteries. the d600 burns through batteries compared to the d7000. i would get one or two extras depending on how you shoot.

i got the tamron 24-70 vc. it is an awesome lens. other have argued that the 2.8 isnt quite enough to get the separation you see in a 1.4 lens and the nikon 24-120 f4 vr is just as good with more range. the kit lens has been well received too. my sister is a professional photographer and she uses a kit lens. DXO is in love with the new tamron 2.8 vc lenses though i am shooting an old 70-200 not os sigma and it is still a great lens. my 70-300 is a bit of a letdown particularly at 300. i sometimes use an old nikon 50 1.4 af-d as my walk around lens. i would recommend that you hop over to fred meranda, nikonians, thom hogan or dpreview and see what the pro's are saying about the various lenses. stay away from Ren Kockwell. the guy has a history of saying some stupid stuff.

On the entire internet :).

Seriously, every site you go to (even if you don't fully trust DxOMark, like me) shows the Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC as superior to the Nikon 24-70/2.8 II, and very close to the world-beating Canon 24-70/2.8 II. And that's just optically- it also has a very good implementation of stabilization.

Also, please don't think I'm biased toward Canon (Canon shooter that I am). Canon does have better glass in general, but Nikon has the better sensors, and Nikon does have the 14-24, known as the very best wide-angle zoom on the market. Happy hunting!

sorry. it looks like the code doesnt work anymore. it worked when i tested it a few nights ago for someone else. it might be worth calling because the camera comes up on the short list from the link.

DXO does a lot of lens reviews. the problem is they are lab centered and do not take into account real world experience such quality of bokeh, mid-tone contrast, color rendition or focus speed. http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Public ... Nikon-D600

photozone.de does a little better but i would also look at the forums i mentioned earlier. the owner at lensrentals.com gives his opinion on each of the lenses he rents and can put some perspective on the numbers you see at sites like DXO.

the tamron is sharper. that is what most of the reviews measure. the nikon will focus faster and have better quality glass and coating to give slightly better fine detail such as color and contrast. the nikon will have better weather sealing. the differences are small but can be meaningful. the nikon will be better for action and fine art work. the tamron has vc so will give you a few extra stops allowing you to take pictures that you might not be able to with the nikon. i took a tack sharp image of my wife at iso 3200, 1/10 sec, f2.8. i could not have handheld the camera at that speed with the nikon. of course i have primes if the picture really matters.

So there seems to be pro and con for each. I am wondering whether to get Nikon 24-70mm f2.8~ for $1,900 or Tamron 24-70 f2.8~ VC for $1,300. I previously indicated my budget for a zoom lens is $1000 but I scratch this. Further advice is appreciated.

Well, first of all, disclaimer: I shoot Canon, not Nikon, so my advice is going to be fairly generic, rather than weighing up pros and cons.

With that in mind: $1000 is pretty cheap for a quality zoom lens; for that sort of focal length and aperture, I'd be expecting to pay anywhere from $1400 up. VC (Vibration Control, I assume - same idea as Canon's IS, or Nikon's VR) is useful, but tends to be less effective at shorter focal lengths than longer - nature of the beast.

I'd probably have a look at the user reviews on Fredmiranda.com, and see what they have to say; Thom Hogan may also have some useful information (his advice on supports - tripods and monopods - is old, but still very relevant.) Hope this helps a little.
