This place has been pretty slow lately, my own contributions included. I'd love for updates on what folks have been shooting or trying to shoot lately. For myself, I have lately gotten into flash work. I've always been (if I am honest) afraid of working with a flash. But, I've been on strobist a lot lately and its helped. I just had a birthday and my wife and parents colluded to get my an umbrella, stand, remote flash cable, and a new flash. Looks like the family wants higher quality family portraits. We'll see how well that works out, but I'm eager to try.
Also, I have been working to swing this swap for a while now, and I have finally been successful. I just picked up a Minolta 80-200/2.8 HS G. Its a fairly compact 70/80-200/2.8. In fact, I much prefer the size to the Tamron 70-300 USD (which is now for sale). This is a very sharp zoom with a very fast focus. It is also pre-ssm, usd, usm, ssd, lmnop but it is compares well to the Sony 70-200/2.8 SSM for speed, but quiet it isn't. Its also got a ton of torque. My first auto-focus twisted my camera a bit. Probably close to 40 degrees. So, now I will make sure I am prepared for it. But, this is going to be my go-to for anything high speed or indoors forever. I cannot see myself ever needing video above 135mm indoors and I've got the 70-400 G SSM for outdoors, so this will be the photo shooting baby. I love the classic look to it. It seems like ebay and private sellers are all charging an arm and a leg for it. I'm thrilled I got it for under $1,000 with a 2 yr. warranty from Adorama.
