So just how capable is the quad-core Intel stock cooler?

Sat May 28, 2016 3:51 am

Just for kicks and giggles (apparently it must have been a very boring morning/afternoon), I mounted the Intel stock cooler that came with my i5-4590 and ran Prime95's Small FFTs torture test. CPU at stock settings, mind you, so none of the 3.7 GHz all cores business this time around.

At first, it started gently at about 65C, but apparently the sheer amount of heat from the CPU eventually caught up with it and within 2 to 3 minutes or so, the CPU package temperature (and three of its cores) managed to hit 100C and ended up intermittently losing turbo boost (but never went below 3.3 GHz). Oddly enough, Core #3 (fourth core) never exceeded 91C.

Doing the exact same thing with a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO netted me 62C "just started the test" and peaked at 72C after 20 minutes, maintaining 3.5 GHz throughout. So I guess you could say that even a "lowly" TX3 EVO is at least 28C better than the stock cooler under a stock i5-4590 in a "worst case" load.

Makes me wonder if the Intel stock cooler is designed to be just "barely enough" with no margin... How much do these cost Intel and/or their OEM partner to make? Especially since TX3 (EVO)s are dirt cheap everywhere I could find.

huh and that's just a 92mm "tower" (hah! more like 2 story building am I right) cooler. Sounds like I made a good call swapping out the stock cooler for this TX3 unit when I assembled my wife's i5-2500 based PC

Makes me wonder if there are any better push-pin cooler(s) than the TX3 (EVO) at this point. Shame about it not supporting LGA2011-v3, though, so that kind of makes you need something beefier, even if you're only trying to run at stock. (Though, maybe a 145W cooler is a bad idea/non-starter on a ~145W CPU?)

I'm still a bit concerned about the temps, though as after testing the system with a max load on the GPU (basically 100% TDP, which can actually be hit rather easily sometimes), the case gets quite warm - and seems like I take a further 10C penalty to all internal temps once the case is warmed up. Going to do some extra testing just to confirm. I think the TX3 series might just not cut it when everything is loaded to the max, no thanks to the elevated ambient temps here (30C).

The $23 Arctic Freezer i11 is a similar 92 mm tower cooler that fits on LGA2011.

if the TX3 doesn't cut it, the stock cooler in the same case with the same case fans will do even worse. The only saving grace the stock cooler would have is that it heats up the CPU so much that the CPU throttles itself and reduces total heat output, thereby marginally lowering the temperature in the case

there's a reason that the likes of Dell prefer to dump the CPU heat directly out the case, a bit of cardboard and tape could make that work for the TX3 as well
