Hi,

With all the noise about how great an overclocker the P4 1.6A is I've been doing some reading. One thing that looks like a viable option is run an i845D at 133MHz bus, which would give a 1.6A an overclock to 2.1GHz. Stability is my overriding concern, and here comes the critical question: if you overclock the i845D to 133MHz, does the BIOS allow you to alter the AGP/PCI divider so that you can run your PCI bus at 33MHz? I'm looking at this board in particular, but would be keen on hearing anyone's experience with any i845D board.

The motherboard manual for the GA-8IRXP doesn't seem to help much - my hunch is that the PCI clock is a fixed division of the bus frequency. Call me old fashioned, but I simply don't like running my PCI bus at 43MHz - not good for data integrity and suchlike :wink:

The 8IRX and 8IRXP both set the PCI & AGP busses back to spec when you hit 133 FSB. They also have other dividers that can get you close to spec at other FSBs.
I have run my 1.60A at 133 on an 8IRX, but had some stability issues that I need to track down, but the PCI and AGP speeds were normal.

It's a really hot day today(100F), but the system is working fine at 133FSB, 2018 MHz, with mem at 266 CAS 2. It seems to have settled down nicely. The problems I was having seemed to be like the documented problems with the 8IRXP on Google - but they have gone away.

It was around 30 deg. C in the house last night, and I ran Prime95 torture for 3 hours. The CPU temp varied between 53 and 55 deg. C, but I had no errors.
Then this morning it was 22 deg., and the board beeped and locked on first startup...
WTH? But I get no errors running 133FSB/266 CAS-2.. Board is stable - just has startup issue sometimes.

I've also heard all the talk about the 1.6A being the new 300A, what I want to know is this?

The 300A was happy running 50% faster than it's intended clock e.g. 450, how much faster can you get the 1.6A or 1.8A to HAPPILY overclock?

Are we talking 2400MHz? If so, count me in :smile: That's an amazing price/performance ratio, considering all the other components will be running faster as well...

That's even richer considering it's coming from me,

I consider a 33% overclock pretty darn reasonable, and with the exception of the 845D chipset, everything else runs to spec. I am sure that it will go higher with more voltage/cooling - but that's for the extremists - I am just happy to get something for nothing...

P.S. I think the problem with the motherboard is caused by starting up so darn fast, it doesn't initialise itself properly. After the first start, everything else works perfectly.

IntelMole - take a look at this

Note that "LN2 cooling" means they're using liquid nitrogen to cool it - not for your average home user!
