Volcano 9...problem!

Wed Sep 25, 2002 6:19 pm

Hi everybody!

I recently bought this cooler and after a few days tha maximum rpm started to fall gradually :( that is from 5400 max it droped to 5100.Apart from this, the most annoying is that there are some rpm variations while in use, which are really disturbing. For instance i set it to rotate at 3000 rpm and then it goes like 3045..3095..2920..2980.. the sound it produces is like an aeroplane preparing to land but then goes up again! :D

At the beginning it was extremely stable ....what do you advise me to do?Use some kind of oil? Or is the product faulty?
Otherwise it cools very effectively :
athlon 900@1100 @3000rpm 44 C at max load without case ventilation!
thanks

Never use oil on these fans, the motors will die before oil would ever be needed, besides they are sealed bearings, anyway as long as the place you purchased it from is cool i would try another one to at least compare it, also if you know anyone with the thermaltake smart casefan ask them since it is the same, i would get a new one though

I think you just got a crappy fan. You can try oiling it if you want, but it's a PITA. You have to pull out the rubber plug, and use a very lightweight synthetic oil for it to do any good....but for a $4 fan it's better just to get a new one : D

Variations

Hi there. When you set the RPM to a set speed, that's only it's rough speed, it won't spin exactly bang on constantly at that speed. This is why maufacturers state their RPM speeds with a + and - percentage on the end e.g the Volcano 6cu has a fan speed of 5400+-10%. That means the fan speed may variy anywhere between 0-10% in RPM whether it's increasing or decreasing RPM speeds e.g it's max RPM ideally should be 5940rpm, and it's minimum 4860rpm. Hope I've made sense, cause theres quite a bit of maths in there.

I got my Volcano 9 today and it does the same thing, i am running my 1600+ at 37C idle, i have not tried a looping benchmark to heat it up yet, it is really loud at full spead

Just wondering if you are using the Thermal Probe on the volcano 9?

I'm using the probe on my Volcano 9. I've put it on top of the die package (not on die itself) as close to the die as I can get it without touching (didn't want to interfere with heat transfer to sink). The goal is to get the very end of the probe in a region where the "ambient" temperature is as close to actual die temp as possible. I didn't think that would happen with the probe on the bottom of the die as shown in the instructions. Plus, snapping that heat sink down with the probe wires running between the processor pins just gave me the willies.

With this setup, thermal throttling of fan speed is just about instantaeous. Launch a program and the fan instantly speeds up. So, I guess I've got it just about right.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

maybe the power supply isn't giving it a constant voltage, have you checked your voltages using mbm5 or a program that came with your motherboard?

You're not using any cpu cooling software are you? I assume you've got a VIA chipset. It always makes my fan speeds go funny when I use such software.

Bit random I know....
