What's the best cpu fan for under $20

Thu Nov 21, 2002 9:41 pm

I'm going to buy a new cpu/heatsink fan but dont know what the best one would be for under $20...any suggestions? I just want a cool cpu and not have to worry about my cpu burning out, plus I want to do some minor overclocking but not to major. I was looking at the valcano7 but not sure if there are other ones out there that are good and don't cost to much. I'll also be using arctic silver3 paste.

My system:
Antek performance plus 660AMG case
MSI KT4 Ultra motherboard
256 Samsung PC 2700 ddram
AMD Athlon XP 1800 cpu

I am not too wild about my Volcano7. I bought a somewhat-expensive SLK-800 to replace it.

The CoolerMaster DP5-7H53F looks like a reasonably-effective, very cheap, and fairly-quiet solution, if you can find one.
P.S.:
CP5-7JD1B looks even better, and can be had for as little as $11 (about 50% more than the other one).

Got a OCZ Goliath and a Volcano 7...ocz runs about 3-4 degrees cooler, little louder but u can change that with a fan. Go to HardCorecooling.com. They r on sale for 18.95 and if not mistaken, they r based in NY :D

If you're willing to spend a little more, you might want to get the Vantec Aeroflow. I got one at Newegg for about $33. I can't even hear the cpu fan, which is a TMD(Tip-Magnetic-Drive). The idle temp for my 2400+ is around 39-40 Celsius, and on full-load it doesn't go higher than 48 C(I think). It also looks kinda cool, and has a weird heatsink design. But either way try and check it out, it's defintely worth the price.

I am not thrilled with the Volcano 7. It has a copper core, a few widely-spaced aluminum fins, and a thermally-controlled 80mm fan. My fan is quite noisy and the cooling is not that great. I will replace the Volcano7 with this shiny new (but rather expensive) SLK-800 the next time that I disassemble that system (within a month).

I made a decisions and I bought a Cooler Master HHC-001Pure Copper heatsink/fan and also bought arctic silver3...now I'm waiting for it to be shipped from newegg.com. I read that this fan is loud but I don't really care about that, how loud can it be anyway? plus I usually have my games or mp3s blasting

I got me new fan and arctic silver on my system now. Its been on for 5 hours straight and I just played some online games for a few hours and the hottest my cpu got was 38 degrees celcius. I think the arctic silver doesnt really work until about 3 days after its on the cpu right? maybe my temps will lower. I'll try overclocking tomorrow
Cooler MAster HAF case
Corsair 850w powersuply
MSI 790FX-GD70
AMD Phenon x4 695 Black Edition 3.4 GHZ
