Does this require an extinguisher?

Sat Dec 28, 2002 6:27 pm

Well, the XP2600+ system's runnning fine. Stable, quick, all the rest. However, should I be worried that it averages 75°C? I mean, it's still got the OEM cooler on (Which won't be the case for much longer, hopefully.), so I'm assuming it's ok for now. Reassurance would be appreciated, though =)

Are you sure that the heatsink is not on backwards, it will fit that way, and it will not make proper contact with the core. Thus you will get really high temps. Also you may want to check that the fan is plugged in and turning.

Yup. Heatsink is on right, fan is turning. Ah well...the motherboard'll switch it off it gets hot enough to melt the fan, and like I say...I'll be cooling it s'more soon.

Okay, first off the new T-Breds have 2 sensors for measuring temperature.

One is the on-die temp sensor. Now this will read the temperature inside the core, and it is bound to be really hot.

According to MBM 5, my Athlon XP 2200+ is currently registering.........

63C

Please note that I am running distributed.net and that puts the processor utilization at 100%.

The external temperature probe is reading 45C.

So......

I wouldn't start freaking just yet. Make sure you are reading the right diode.

Let me know what your on-die diode and the off die diode is reading.

p.s. The off die diode is usually a feature implemented by motherboard manufacturers. Some have them, some don't.

z00100 is right, make sure that you are reading the socket sensor and not the core sensor. If these temperatures are truly being read by your socket sensor, replace your current HSF immediately (unless it is mounted improperly, then simply switch it around). 75°C is borderline overheating (I believe threshold is in the 80's) and is certainly abnormal (if socket, not core temps). Also, you might want to consider investing in some decent case ventilation if you don't already have it. No matter what kind of HSF you have, a lack of airflow in your case will kill any extra cooling that a high quality HSF could offer over the stock cooler. Might want to keep an extinguisher handy, just in case.

That sounds WAY too hot.

Do you have adequate case cooling (i.e. moving enough air in and out of your case)?
