Cant decide on cpu cooler

Sat Apr 03, 2010 11:43 am

Hi guys

Im trying to choose between these 2 coolers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... =WC-002-CS and this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Coolermaster-V8 ... pd_cp_ce_0.
I guess i want the same things as everyone else, good cooling as quite as possable as my pc is in the lounge in my house. Any ideas whats the better choise? I want to overclock my q6600 and im going to use this case http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001 ... d_i=468294.

Thanks for the advice in advance

For the price of those two, you could probably get a cheaper CPU cooler and a silent high CFM fan, and still have a few bucks left over. I might suggest the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+. I use that in my I5 750, and it more than does the job of keeping it cool. If I'd bothered getting a higher CFM fan it would to even better. Unless you are looking to do some extreme overclocking, that one is a great deal cheaper, and more than capable of drawing heat away from the CPU. How high were you looking to go with your overclock?

A core 2 duo at 2 GHz, overclocked at 3 GHz just for fun.
Running for a year at standard speed. No need for extra gigahertz...

and for your question: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/16 ... _3.40.html
maximum 51 Celsius.

This is a better cooler than either you have linked in your OP and is a good deal when you consider it comes with two fans that go for $30US each.

That is awfully expensive. I think you'd only really need a cooler like that if your overclock is going to approach 1.5V on the core when overclocking the Q6600. That much voltage is only really needed if you are going to exceed 3.6GHz. Once you get into that region, it becomes an area of diminishing returns. If the goal here is to obtain a modest to high overclock, and not an extreme result, I kind of question spending excess money.

I would like to know how far this overclock is going to go. That way a good cost versus reward balance can be achieved. No use spending 100bucks to get a 3.2-3.4GHz result overclock.

I've always been pleased with Thermalright coolers.

That's a nice cooler, but if the OP has the space, and needs the fans, the Noctua DH-14 still gets my nod as the better choice for cooling and for value. If he doesn't need all the cooling the DH-14 offers he can pull the 12CM fan off the front and use it as a case fan.

@OP - If you want an entry level water cooler, check out the new CoolIT water cooler. This may not be on the market just yet, but it looks promising, and should be out shortly (not sure when you're buying).

Ok with regards to how far this overclock will go and the expence comments i feel i need to explain my full plan :) I currently have Q6600 at stock, Asus P5Q pro turbo , basic 4GB ram 800mhz, bfg 9800gt card, 1Tb WDB HDD, this cooler http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... ce=froogle and this case http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgur ... s%3Disch:1. i struggle to OC my cpu atm because of the temps, anything about 2.6-2.7 goes over 60-65C at full load. So i plan to buy a cooling solution for my future expantion to i7 that will let me OC my Q6600 in the mean time, then buy a new gpu, then eventually replace my mobo, chip and ram once i have saved up the money. So this cooler im buying i want to take alot further than the q6600. hope that makes sence

What stepping is your Q6600? The older B3 stepping will be hard to get much over 3.0.

That intake fan on the side may cause clearance issues for the Thermaltake JAE suggested or the Noctua DH-14 I suggested. Better check that.

Either cooler is a good choice. I think overall the DH-14 is the better value since it comes with two high quality fans.

If clearance is an issue with that side fan, and you want to keep it, then perhaps the CoolIT or Corsair water coolers is the way to go.

I can tell you though that the DH-14 comes with all the mounting hardware you'll need for the Q6600, the i5 CPUs, and the i7 CPUs. I have one. It runs much cooler than my old TRUE (at least 5C).

keep in mind, most coolers can be reused in your future build so don't buy the cheapest one but you don't need the most expensive one either. Whatever cooler you get, be sure that it was produced recently so that you have the new brackets as well as the old.

I am using the Corsair H50 water cooler on an i7 860 overclocked to 4Ghz. Temps on idle are 36c load temps are around 59 to 65c depending on the ambient temp.

I won an H50 in the TR giveaway, and yes, it's an excellent cooler. If your computer sits on your desk, the pump kinda vibrates a bit.

The pump in the one I won died, but Corsair was awesome, they replaced it under warranty and did so pretty quick. It does not appear to be a common problem so don't consider this post a warning against them or anything.

But to me, you're not going to get temps much better than a Xigmatek 1283. If you have room in your case for a V8 you have room for a Xigmatek.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Went for the H50 in the end and im very impressed, with my new antec 1200 case my temps dropped 15c. Got my B3 stepping Q6600 up to 3.2Ghz with idle temps of 27c and full load temps of 51c. Its a amazing cooler, thanks for the input
