CPU fan making TONS of noise

My CPU fan is making TONS of noise - it literally sounds like its about to take off. I checked the BIOS to see the specs and they were as follows:

(keep in mind that i am in the bios and the CPU isn't under any stress)

CPU Temp - starting at 35 degrees Celsius climbing to almost 40 degrees (i set an alarm for if it passes 60 degrees Celsius/140 degrees Fahrenheit)

System Temp - starting around 30 degrees Celsius rising to also about 40 degrees

CPU Fan Speed - 4500 RPM rising to above 5000 RPM

System Fan Speed - 1300 RPM rising to close to 1600 RPM

If anybody can help me understand whats going on i'd be ever grateful. Do i need a new CPU fan? Is my CPU too hot? could this cause my HD to crash? etc. Dangers and Solutions... thanks.

Is this a new system?

Separately, what are the specs?

Note that CPUs are spec'd to go well above 60c, and for reference, GPUs can go even higher (my HD6950's climb up to 90c under load and stay there).

The CPU fan speed looks normal for a stock HSF, and I've seen considerable noise come out of them before. They usually quiet down though. A better perspective would be to monitor fanspeed idle at the desktop, and then with all cores fully loaded; monitoring core temperature side by side.

The system is not new - it is almost a year old (built around Sept. of 2010). Its not really the temperature that is worrying me. The Smart Fan is disabled in the BIOS meaning the the loud fan noise doesn't necessarily correspond to high CPU temperature. I just want the damn thing to shut up. But i am also kinda worried that something is going wrong.

specs:

CPU - AMD Phenom IIX4 955 3.2 GHZ

Memory - 4 GB RAM (DDR3 i think?!?)

HD - 1 TB 7200 RPM

CX430 Corsair PSU

GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-UD2H AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

stock cpu cooler fan running at 100% is going to be loud.

Do have cool&quite enabled in the bios and OS?

What do you have against smartfan ?

Finally, the bearing could be going out on your stock cooler (least likely compared to the above but possible)

where is Cool&Quiet in the BIOS?

usually, advanced>CPU configuration>cool&quite>enable/disable/auto

auto if fine. this will allow the cpu to idle down. You will still need to enable dynamic fan control to allow your CPU cooling fan to slow down.

you were right... i shouldn't have anything against CPU Smart Fan. It fixed it. Its exactly the opposite of what i was thinking. The CPU was cool but because the Smart Fan Control was disabled the fan was at full speed anyway. I feel kinda dumb. thanks for the help... i appreciate it.
