Hello!
I want to cool my 3 year old Core 2 Duo PC.
Even writing this post generates 43 C.
When stressed with prime95, It shoots to 99 C and stays there. Will my system be harmed by this?
I'm monitoring my system with 'Piriform Speccy'

System Specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93GHz Wolfdale 45nm
2.00 GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz (5-5-5-15)
Intel Corporation DG41RQ (J2E1)
298GB SAMSUNG HD321HJ ATA Device (SATA)
Stock Intel Cooler
A very cheap $20 micro-ATX PC Enclosure with no extra fan. # Except the Bundled 450W PSU.

There's your problem. What cooler height tolerance does it have? By that i mean how much space is there between the top of the CPU to the inner edge of the side panel (in milimeters pls). That's a vital info in order to determine what will fit in there.

Nvm i refreshed my memory by checking wikipedia and the only other sockets that supported Conroes and Penryns were server sockets and i doubt you have one.

Regarding the chip reaching 99 degrees Celsius and if that's harmfull, it depends on the model Could you post the exact name of the CPU you have? I presume it shouldn't be since all Core 2 Duos should have thermal throttling, saving them before they burn....so i presume it can take it. That's not to say it's optiomal, you def. need to improve cooling.

99C? oooO that is hot. You shouldn't be getting that hot. c2d weren't hot processors.

It's a socket LGA 775 Core 2 Duo
The cooler height tolerance is around 140 millimeter.
I have tried re-seating the stock cooler and the problem persists even then.

I feel like this could be a joke.

Solution:
1: put a fan in the case - preferable a 120mm size fan
2: if necessary, remove the side of the case? Dunno.
3: put a better heatsink (but do this last, the real problem is likely case ventilation)

OK. Thank You, I myself admit that it's the fault of poor ventilation. Me fool just hasn't detected it in those 3 years.

No problem! Hope all turns out well.

This should be a tight fit but it's miles better than the stock cooler. That said you will also need some airflow around the CPU socket. Do you have any place on the top or on the rear of the case for a fan?

Edit: if your budget is higher you could actually buy a cotained water loop from Corsair or ther others. The only spec requirement would be for your case to have a fan mount for a 120mm fan either on top above the CPU, or in the rear besides the CPU.

Definitely not good for a processor to get this hot, especially not long-term.

The C2D should be throttling at 90 or 95C if I remember correctly - so that number looks wrong and I suspect Piriform Speccy is not reading the values right.

Use Real Temp or CoreTemp instead and see if you still get the same numbers.

The only time my C2Q has ever gone to 99 degrees is when the heat sink has been absolutely coated in dust. Maybe try cleaning it? After I cleaned it it would only get to ~60-65 deg C at 100% core usage.
