My CPU temperature is at 55 degrees plus.

I have ordered some case fans so that might help but I didn't use any thermal gel when I put the heatsink on. There was a green tab to peel off the heatsink which left something behind, will this be good enough stuff?

Also will the one fan blowing out at the top of the back and one blowing in at the bottom of the front be good enough? The fans only cost 99p each so will these not be good enough either?

If the heatsink/fan combo in question is the retail supplied one, yes, this should be sufficient.

I have yet to see any conclusive data on the different types of thermal paste out on the market. I for a long time used the generic RadioShack thermal paste and then I bought Artic Silver II to use on my new copper heatsink. Know I am wondering to myself which was better.

What you should look at is the temp that you are getting is within the chipmakers temp tolerances.

By the way what is the CPU and was tha 55C or 55F?

55C

The computer often freezes up especially on hot days. I think this is when the CPU reaches 60 degrees C.

I'm just trying to find out how hot the XPs can run but struggling. Anyone know?

My AMD MP 1600+ oc'ed to 1.6GHz runs at around 58C under load. I have 2 fans in there for case cooling and a dragon orb 3 (no paste) for the cpu. Hope that helps.

Thanks. It makes me less worried about 55
How much difference will the case fans make do you think?

And if it's not the CPU overheating, does that mean something else is overheating to make it freeze? The heatsink on my voodoo 3 is very hot. As in fingure burning (physical marks) and egg frying (I've not tried that but heard someone did it with an XP processor and it might work  )

Guys, just remember that you are reading temps from the in socket thermistor, which has been proven to be innaccurate as you are onl measuring the temp of the air in socket, not the CPU core temp.

Core temp readings are *usually* anywhere from 5-10 degreees HIGHER than what the socket thermistor shows. It depends on the board and the HSF you are using.

I am? I thought the XP had a core thermistor on it? Now I am more worried. I am really running at 70 degrees? Ouch.

Yes, the XP has the internal diode. However, the motherboard must be equipped to read from this diode....To my knowledge (and I may be wrong) there are no motherboards out there that equip this feature. Anybody know of one that does?

Nope. I can't think of any boards that do. In fact, I'm pretty sure there aren't any XP boards on the market at the moment that read the temp from the internal diode.
Being right doesn't matter if no one listens.

I think the recent Asus mobos like the A7M333 do. All the ones equipped with "C.O.P."

how hot is too hot. For in the case, and CPU temps

I don't want anything to blow for me to find out!
