I recently built a Duron 950 system for Mom. I didn't think much about what HSF to get, and picked up a Volcano 5.

It's plenty cool (or at least cool enough), but plenty loud. And Mom doesn't like that.

This system is not, nor ever will be, overclocked. It's in some generic Soyo case, only fan besides the Volcano is the PSU fan. It's running 40 degrees CPU, 36 system right now, according to built in sensors. "Full load" for this system means Mom has Word open, and Winamp if she ever gets some mp3s.

Can anyone suggest a HSF fan that I can use to replace the Volcano? This is not your typical TR request. It does NOT need to be good at keeping things cool. It DOES need to be quiet. I also don't want to spend $30 on a HSF when the rest of the system combined cost $250 (tops).

Sidenote (bonus points for those who can help with this): the mobo right now does not detect the fan (the Volcano). Because of that, I had to disable the auto-shut-down-if-fan-stops-working feaure, and more importantly, the fan doesn't spin down when I go into standby. Any guesses if this a fan problem or a mobo problem? It's a Soyo K7-VEMPRO, and I definately have the fan plugged into the right power connector. Ideas?

Just replace the fan with a quieter 60mm one. If you want a new heat sink, I'd suggest a cheap Global Win WBK68 from Newegg or even cheaper SVC GC68. Newegg sells it under the name "AOC" model number D5-825. Here's a review of it:

Not bad for an $8.00 HSF!

Any 60 mm fan? Will I need an adaptor to make it fit? And how do I avoid picking up a super loud one the way I did the first time?

I'm still a newbie when it comes to this stuff...

... so specifics are most welcome. As in brand, part #, even place to purchase if you want to be my best friend.

As long as you order the same size 60mm fan (60x15, 60x25, etc)as the one the heatsink came with it should fit fine.

A couple of places with fans:

I have a 4200 rpm Sanyo-Denki 60mm fan on my overclocked and over-volted Duron. It provides less cooling than a screaming 7k rpm Delta, but it is quiet enough that I can live with it.
