SCSI tape drive issue

Mon Sep 15, 2003 9:04 pm

I just moved from a Seagate IDE tape drive to a Compaq DLT 2000
SCSI drive, controlled by an Adaptec 2940UW PCI slot SCSI adapter.
I have all the drivers, updated the firmware on both the drive and controller card and I can see both the drive and card in Device Mangler.
I can't, however, see the drive in "My Computer".

The only thing I can think of is the error message I get when the system boots. It goes through the SCSI card boot, sees the drive and then tells me SCSI Bios wasn't loaded.

I've used this card for several years to control a SCSI DVD drive and a Zip drive with no problems.

Been to all the sites, read all the manuals.

How do I get the bios to load? Is this the root of my problem?

Help !!!

Yes, it's most definitely your problem.. If the BIOS on the card doesn't load, nothing connected to the drive will be initialized and won't be detected by Windoze.

make sure everything is seated correctly, and that jumpers are set right.

Um, tape drives aren't supposed to show up in "My Computer". You need to backup software to use the tape drive. Fire up "Backup" under Accessories -> System Tools and see what happens.

And the SCSI BIOS normally is only used to boot the computer from a SCSI hard drive and make the drive visible from DOS. If it's not booting the computer, it doesn't even need to be enabled.

Steel hit it right on the nose. I haven't fooled around with setting up a SCSI tape drive for a while, just a bunch of IDE stuff and forgot that little bit of SCSI trivia. As soon as I loaded my back-up software, I remembered, and found the drive in the available destinations.

Age does some random things to your memeory.

Thanks for the help..........
