Thinking about this 240GB SSD as system drive for build

Wed Mar 04, 2015 10:16 am

Hey all, I saw this deal on an $89 240GB SSD. Seems too good to be true? Anything funky I should be aware of on this drive/controller?

URL Here

Edit: Ewww... looking at some of the reviews on Newegg, seems a little sketchy.

That was the first SSD I ever owned, got it a little over 3 years ago. So it's old tech. But it keeps on rocking in my wife's PC, 3 years of solid performance for me.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

That's a pretty old drive, based on an even older (second-gen) SandForce controller. Per this review, it was a poor performer even by 2013 standards; the main thing it had going for it is cost/GB. The review also mentions that part of the reason it is slow is that it only has 4 flash chips in it, which means it is using only 4 channels of the flash controller (the SF-2281 in that drive supports 8 channels, so it's working with half the raw bandwidth it was designed for). So this is clearly a cheap design which was intended to hit a particular (rock-bottom) price point.

It'll still be a step up from a mechanical HDD, but unless your budget is really tight I'd look elsewhere.

Edit: I wonder if Newegg (or Mushkin) had a truckload of old stock they've decided to unload at a loss. I'd be a little surprised if they're still manufacturing a design that old.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Aside from Sandforce controllers working best with compressible data, I'm not sure. :)

$10 more would get you a MX100 256GB drive, which you would be much much better off with. Better performance regardless of data type and better reliability.

$5 more could get you a BX100. (can't find the sale.)

Thanks for the advice guys. Based on it, I decided to pass on this drive. :)

Ended up purchasing this 512GB SSD from Transcend at Amazon for $175 cuz it was cheap and came with the 3.5 to 2.5 bracket and cloning software. :) Hope its a good one.

Ehh, a BX100 is only $10 more. And a 3.5" to 2.5" bracket? Come on, is duct tape not good enough for you? :D (Although seriously, for an SSD, I'd be fine with velcro or tape mounting it if that was easiest.)
