File Recovery

Mon Oct 27, 2003 1:26 pm

Are there anyways or programs to use to recover a deleted file on Win 98? The harddrive hasn't been formatted yet and it hasn't been more than a week since it happened. Any suggestions? My brother really needs that file. In case it helps, it's a .doc or .txt file.

:( Well IIRC DOS6.2 (just before Win95) had an UNDELETE.EXE command which I used on occassions and worked very well. Basically when something is deleted it only loses its place in the File Allocation Table and the first character of its filename. I would imagine Norton offer(ed) a tool for undeleting but I never really used Norton Utils. Just be careful because the file itself will easily become over-written if you run Windows from that HD or add any new files, defragging is likely to kill it too. If the disk has been totally unused since it happened the chances should be good with the right tool. I take it you checked the Recycle bin ...

Ontrack EZ Recovery.

It's all you'll ever need.

Not any decent ones will be free.

Recently i accidentally deleted a partition off my drive and used Restorer2000 to retreive my lost data. Worked absolutely perfect.

BTW you will likely need a second drive to recover to since recovering data on to the same hard drive from which it came will possibly overwrite the needed data.

just brew it!

Depending on how much the system has been used in the week since the file was deleted, the area of the disk containing the file data may have already been overwritten with other files, making it irretrievable (at least, not without paying big bucks to a professional data recovery service).
