Can I change the partition size?

Fri Oct 31, 2003 12:44 am

I have a Windows 2000 server with a RAID5 array at my office. The explorer shows 2 partitions, C and D. Now, C partition size is something like 3 GB and D partition size is approx 35 to 40 GB. After installing so many applications in C drive, the free space is just abt 200-300MB. While D drive has something like 33 GB free space.

It is becoming difficult to install any applications or upgrades on the server due to free space constraints. So I'd like to know if there is any utility which can let me adjust the partition size(increase C and decrease D) without losing any data.

With that sort of partitioning scheme, few if any apps should be installed on C. Also, installing an OS on a RAID5 is bad for performance - slow writes aren't that great for an OS partition. Overall it just seems like a strange setup - something like a small OS partition, a medium sized applications partition, and a big data partition seems more appropriate, and I'd rather have the OS and apps on a RAID10 myself.

Try partition magic for reallocating partitions. It would be wise to back up first.

partition magic

Thanx mattsteg

I visited the partition magic website.
It says in the list of supported OSes:
Windows XP
Windows 95/98
Windows Me
Windows 2000 Professional
NT 4.0 workstation
DOS

All these are workstations.
Does it support Windows 2000 Server?

It doesn't so you would need server magic I believe. I can't remember the exact name but I know partition magic will not install with windows 2000 server or advanced server.

It might not install on Win2K server, but I believe he can rip the server's HDD out and connect it to some other PC which does have Partition Magic installed. Or you can just install it in another PC and use the floppy/CD bootdisks, methinks.

Yeah that could work too but it looks like he is runnning RAID. I'm not sure if that would be a problem.

I think I've tried using the floppy version of Partition Magic on a server once and it refused to work. I suppose it's worth a try, though.

Not worth the effort.

What RAID 5 controller? That may complicate things.
