What's faster?

Fri Feb 13, 2004 12:30 pm

I currently run one SATA Maxtor 120 g, I can't decide whether to get another 120 to run in RAID 0, or a 36g Raptor to run as my OS drive.

Which solution would be faster?

Probably depends on what you're doing. If you frequently stream large files to/from disk (e.g. video editing), the RAID setup might be better... otherwise I think I'd go for the Raptor.

Go for the raptor then, that should speed up your OS and program load times. Or you could go for the best of both worlds and RAID 2 raptors together.

I just ordered two Raptors yesterday...I will make them a RAID0 array as my boot drive.

I would say that's a tough call. Do you have any other drives in your system, because if you do I would go for the RAID setup over a single Raptor because then you can keep a backup of important stuff on another disk, should one of the drives in your RAID0 array fail. If you don't have other drives for backup of important stuff, I would go for the single Raptor as your boot drive I think. Honestly I'm not sure which would be faster, as I don't have experience w/ the Raptor drives (yet).

It is worth noting that the Raptor drives come with a 5 year! warranty.
I noticed a lot of drives are down to 1 year warranties now. the Western Digital JB series drives are still 3 year (those are what I've been buying for work)...

JBI, it should be "get two raptors then put them into RAID 0 configration". Since it looks like you saying that he should get raptors to make a RAID 2. Which is just a ugly RAID configration.

Not if you get them retaill. Only OEM JBs have a 3 year warranty.

I was assuming he was buying only one new drive, and wanted to know whether to get another one like the existing one (and do RAID 0), or get a single Raptor.

RAID-0 is largely a waste except for a narrow margin of use.

A faster single drive is the better investment for the majority of users.

Yup, that's pretty much what I said in my first reply. Frequent streaming of large files is where RAID-0 can be a big win. Otherwise the lower latency of the Raptor is the way to go.

36GB is more than enough for an OS Disk.

EDIT: typo

LOL  When you get the hard drive(s), don't waste your money making RAID-0 arrays. RAID-1 or RAID 1+0 do much more sense. ;)

I've got a 36GB Raptor in my new PC.

I ain't ever going back. Ahhhh 10,000 RPM heaven.

I came from a 80GB 8MB cache WD 7200 drive. SLOW!!! I say, SLOW!!! :D

I don't. Most of the time I'll stay on task and if my task changes it would be similar to the original task.

Yes but to set up a nice RAID 01 Array 4 Raptors costs.. $720 plus maybe a controller card if you don't have enough SATA ports?

That is really strange, did the description say that it came without anything? It is strange that newegg would not respond to you quickly and try to resolve the problem.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of 74GB Raptors. Can anyone elaborate on the sound and heat since these babies do run fast?
