Looking for SUPER fast ATA/100 drives...

My Maxtor 40Gb ATA/100 7200RPM drives only gives me about 25Mb/s. I keep seeing everyone with single drive speeds in the 35-45Mb/s range. I can only assume this is due to the Make/Model of the dive and not really based on the 7200RPM|ATA100 since they are the same. Can anyone recommend some fast, non-IBM GXP (due to heat issues), drives? Thanks.

Any of the Seagate Barracuda IV drives fit the bill. They are in the "over 40" club at storage review. Very quiet too.

Best bang for the buck is the 40gb, you can find it around 90 bucks online.

I'll also recommend the Barracuda IV. I have a couple of the 40s and they're very nice. The near-silent operation is so pleasant you'll wonder how you ever lived with noisy drives.

The current all around fastest ATA drive right now is the Western Digital WD1200JB (8MB cache).

If you don't want to shell out the big bucks, the Barracuda IV is OK too. These things are dead silent, even during heavy seeking.

I would check your cabling too. I have a 75 GXP that did 25k until I gave it an ATA66 cable on the onboard raid. That only bumped it up to the mid 30s, but it was nice to see an improvement over such a trivial thing.
