About **** time. My only concern is how much this drive is going to cost. It's specced out like a SCSI drive and if they price it like one, then why not just go SCSI?

There's usually quite a few months between product announcements and drives showing up on the shelves. And don't worry, the drive you got is plenty fast enough .

Man, that will be a great drive, but I wonder what the price on this monster will be. At this rate, I will never get my credit cards paid off.

I still want the 15k rpm drives. This isnt revolutionairy, just a step in the right direction. I just hope they price it as IDE and not SCSI.

The article mentioned the drive would have a 5 year warranty. And if you remember, the first 7200RPM ATA drives weren't exactly cheap. Not quite up to SCSI prices of the time but still quite a bit more expensive than the 5400RPM drives. It'll take some time and other manufacturers getting in on the action for the prices to come down to a resonable level. But, hey, WD may surprise us and only charge a small premium over the 7200RPM drives. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Looks promising. Cant wait to see some benchmarks.

Hopefully, this will provide SCSI or near SCSI performance for less $$.

I've got 6*WD1200JB, so I can wait, but two of these suckers on my A7N8X's SATA RAID would be incredible. I'm seeing 2*WD 10K SATA in RAID for boot/OS, with 8-10 WD1200JB on a 3ware card for main storage.


I can't wait for 10K SATA. Makes you wonder how far off 15K+ SCSI is, now that they're giving up 10K to IDE.... 20K rpm SCSI, anyone?

The words hot, loud, expensive and desirable spring to mind ... at least that's 1 more word than GF-FX has going for it! I'll take my bargain Maxtor 8MB any day ... very fast, pretty cheap and very quiet too!

I doubt it will be either hot or loud. 10K drive technology is very mature. Heck 10K is the low-end stuff in SCSI land.

That's the main difference between now and when 7200RPM IDE drives first started to come out. At that time, 7200 was still a very common speed for SCSI drives as well.

Now, SCSI is WAY past 7200, and is moving away from 10K for performance drives.

But it probably will be expensive for a few reasons: exclusivity, demand vs. supply, and the Serial ATA interface on it.

And yet people seem to prefer the inferior WD 8MB 7200rpm to the Maxtor equivilent! Even so I would educatively presume a 10000rpm HD would produce both more noise and heat than a 7200rpm HD, even with fluid which some 7200rpm HDs already impliment. Many of the early 7200rpm drives were very close in perf to the more mature 5400rpm drives, sure they looked great on paper BUT considering the relatively small perf gains it wasn't worth the noise and heat ... surely we'll see some of the same in the 10000rpm IDE drives.

As for Serial ATA, it isn't any faster, ATA133 is overkill we don't need 150! Sure it has the potential to be hot swappable and is a more modern interface but speed is not its primary benefit AT ALL!

Are you saying it'll be loud because it is using FDB motors? I'm using 15k SCSI drives with those motors in it, and it's much quieter than my previous HDs, can hardly hear them. My case fans might be overpowering the noise though. And I can only hear them on start up, not even during rough and random seeks do I hear them!

Although I just got my 120GB Maxtor 7200rpm 8MB ATA133 fluid HD (reportedly slighjtly faster than WD's and a LOT quieter too) and although it seems a smidge faster in general usage I'm not overly enthralled in comparison to my previous 60GB Maxtor 5400rpm 536DX ATA66/100 std HD. The 60GB was completely silent and ran VERY cool (not that this new HD is hot though). In synthetic usage (ie Sandra) my 120GB hits 30,000 compared to 60GB's 13,000 but I would expect to feel that diff a little more, not that I've done a whole lot with it yet, reinstalled WinXP Pro, all my apps and transferred my files from 60GB etc but little else. Anybody want a good deal on a super silent 60GB HD? BTW I'm running KT400 (so 8235) and generic VIA Hyp v4.45 with nothing o/c'ed or tweaked.

Oh yeah, kind of point being that even with fluid the 7200rpm is noticably louder than my old 5400rpm HD (I'm running a quiet HSF and 1 exhaust fan). I'd like to hear 10000rpm esp a WD HD ...
