I just installed a 80gb hardrive, and formated it. Everytime I try to copy files over to it I get a "cannot copy *.mp3 path too deep error". I have tried fat32 and ntfs.

Um, I don't think that is a drive error. Sounds like a file system error to me. Need some details on what exactly you are trying to copy and the command you are using. My first suggestion would be to use the explorer to drag and drop.

I dragged and dropped a folder full of mp3 files. This same folder can be copied back and forth between my other harddrives.

It could be a hardware problem, I suppose. I stopped using WD drives after a half-dozen in a row developed surface errors. Seagate and Maxtor haven't let me down.

What size or the other drive? And, if you try and copy something else, say your windows directory or some such thing, do you get the same errors. Another question, is this a single 80GB partition, or is the drive broken up?

This has nothing to do w/WD and your HD. What OS are you running? have you upgraded from OS's recently? And how many layers of folders do you have inside that mp3 folder?
I believe I know the answer but I will hold off until we can get more info.

I believe this may be relate to MS technote (Q180410) part of which is quoted below.
<H3>SYMPTOMS</h3><P>When you attempt to open, delete, or rename a folder using Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, you may receive one of the following error messages:
<BR /><UL><BLOCKQUOTE><DIV CLASS="kberrormessage"><LI>Cannot delete folder - path too Deep</li><BR /><BR /><LI>Can't access this folder.<BR />Path is too long</li><BR /><BR /></div></blockquote></ul>Some third-party anti-virus and tape backup programs may be unable to access files or folders with paths that are too long.</p><BR /><H3>CAUSE</h3><P>This problem can occur if the path to the file or folder is longer than
the file system can accommodate. For example, this problem may occur if you connect a drive to a share and then create a path over 255 characters to the share.
If it is, then there is a path that is just on the edge of being to long, and the target directory add enough to it to push it over the limit. Beyond that I agree with RandomNull, more info is needed.

With NT, the maximum filename length is 255 characters, but the maximum length including the path is 256, or something like that. Get a few directories and files with long names, and bad things can happen. I've seen some pretty nasty MP3 file names...
