The Maxtor Diamondmax 740? I just bought one of these (a 40 GB with the fluid bearings-woohoo!) from newegg to replace my ancient IBM Deskstar.

Storage review gave it good marks, but I was wondering if anyone out there had any comments...

Not the 740, but I do have dead DiamondMax drive sitting on my desk waiting for me to RMA it. Just up and died one day. Have had several Maxtor drives though and they seem to be pretty reliable in general.

Vrock:

The D740X turns out much better CC and Biz Winstone scores, on the same hardware, than the IBM 60GXP. I have five, and I like 'em.

And its access times aren't bad either.

. . . though it'd have been nice if its firmware could reorder accesses like IBM's drives can. But you uses what you gets.

Installed it last night, WOW what a difference in speed from my antiquated IBM drive. Just loading up windows is faster.

It's not noisy, but it's not as quiet as I thought it would be. It isn't any noisier than the IBM was, so I can live with it.

I have a 80GB D740X and a 160GB D540X. I've ran these drives to the ground and they haven't missed a beat. Performance wise my D740X with my ATA133 controller card smokes every other ATA(minus RAID setups) hard drive, even the western digital with its 8mb cache!
