Plextor 40x only will burn at 16x

Fri Jun 20, 2003 9:02 am

I've been having this problem for a while and just can't figure it out. In Nero speed tests it says that I can only burn at 24x because the speed of the source data is too slow. When, I try to burn at 24x, it errors out to much. I don't think it is the drive, since i borrowed a buddy of mine's 52x TDK and it did the same thing. Also same problems with Alcohol and Roxio 6. I've tried different IDE cables, different ide channels, everything i could thik of. The firmware is the latest version for the drive. I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem before, since the Plextor support seems to think i'm lying to them. I have tired the drive on the onbaord IDE as well as an ATA card (Promise 100, I think).

On a related note, SandraSoft tells me that my hard drives could be faster, but that's it. Right now the my two hard drives are at UDMA 5 and 4, and the Plextor is at UDMA 2. Also, when building the system, I had to put it in jumperfree mode just to get it post with the drives in. Could jumperfree be doing something strange to my system?

Here are the system specs:

Asus a7m266-d bios rev. 1010
2, Athlon MP 2000+
512 Crucial 2100 DDR
Plextor 40/12/40a
DVD drive
SB Audigy
Radeon 9700
430w Emermax PS
Maxtor 60Gb 7200
WD 10gb 5400 (i think)
Windows XP Pro SP1 (have also tried 2000 SP3)

Thanks for reading this far.

if you're copying from the DVD drive try burning from a disk image instead. i wouldn't know if something else in your system is causing a bottleneck. i still burn at 2x. :-?

Is your CD media rated to burn that high? What kind of CDs are you using?

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm using Memorex 48x rated and have also tried AT&T 40x rated. I've tried both in other burners at those speeds before.

Also, i'm only buring from the hard drive. Would the dual cpus be a problem?

Duallys shouldn't be the issue, no.

Try to hook the drive up to another computer. It may be some weird Plextor/chipset issue.

Did you check the cable and make sure that it was pushed all the way into the drive. Also you may want to check the cable for damage as that may cause errors that slow the drive down.

Good call. This is, of course, for Windows XP.

Thanks for the insight, everybody.

After being bored for a while, I tried putting the drive into the Shuttle nForce 2 pc i just got back from RMA (That's another story  ) With a clean install of Windows XP, I was ready to go. I was using the IDE cables that came with the Shuttle and now the drive will not leave PIO mode. I had left the DMA jumper on the drive during the install, but switched it back. I'm gonna try to reinstall windows with the jumper in place. Good news though, Nero speed test now says 32x, so I'm getting closer

Ok, so clean install of XP, UDMA 2 in device manager. Now it will only speed test to 20x with Burn-proof and Power-Rec on. With them Burn-proof off and Power-Rec on, it goes At 40x (actually 548.5x :o ) So, anybody have an opinion on the use of Burn-proof over Power-Rec?

Ok, so I've decided that the burner is broken. My guess is that the disc isn't spinning fast enough. After trying it in my main machine, an nForce2, and a P4, i'm just gonna buy a new one. I can get a faster burner pretty cheap these days.

Thanks for the help everyone.
