To buy or not to buy...

Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:41 pm

A 512GB Crucial M4: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148527

The only reason I haven't bought an SSD until now is because I really didn't feel comfortable using such a small drive as my primary drive and the prices for larger drives were astronomical.

I knew it would only be a matter of time and now here it is, a sufficient size drive for under $1/GB. I saw this today and I'm seriously considering taking the plunge. What do you all think?

Yeah, this one is even better with the current $20 off promotion:

But it's too small for my liking.

Hmm, do I want that one or this 7mm one?

Is the extra 2.5mm of the other a deal breaker?
Either way I'd jump all over either one.
I'm contemplating one, I just bought a 128 GB version
and a 128GB Samsung 830 not more than 3 weeks ago though.

Question: Would I want to use this with my third party SATA III port if it's not natively supported by my P55 chipset? I seem to recall an issue with TRIM support for these motherboards...

There's another couple of issues: if you're replacing a primary drive, say a Windows C: drive, as the boot drive, you'll probably want to get a drive with transfer software with it, and you'll also probably want a mounting bracket to make a 2.5" drive fit in a 3.5" drive tray.

I don't mind doing a clean install.
