HDD suddenly prevents laptop from booting

Fri Jun 15, 2012 10:09 am

My friend has a WDC5000BPVT, just today he found that his laptop wouldn't even show a POST screen.

He took the hard drive out, and the laptop started working happily (also works with other hard drives plugged in, just not the WD). I put the faulty hard drive into a SATA-USB bridge, worked just fine, passed tests from WD's WinDLG tool. I put the hard drive in my laptop, and it worked just fine.

So it seems that laptop suddenly decided it didn't want to work with the WD hard drive. What gives? I have no idea how to troubleshoot this.

Have you tried putting the WD in your friend's laptop after testing it on another PC? Bad contact could be at fault here, try cleaning the pins on the HDD as well as the port on the laptop and try again. Also, you could try resetting the BIOS to default settings if you haven't already. :) Very weird problem indeed.

You're right, bad contact after all, lightly blew into the SATA socket on the laptop, and wiped the contacts with my finger. And now it works! I hate it when such things happen for seemingly no reason at all. And he lost a Windows 7 partition because he thought it would help...
