Slow HDD with Intel RST

Thu Aug 02, 2012 8:10 am

Hi, thanks for reading. I want to know some advice about this trouble. I jumped from an Phenom 955 with a 780G+SB710 board to a shiny 3570K paired with H77 chipset, both ASUS boards (M3A78-EM, P8H77-M PRO, yeah love the MicroATX). The reason for the move wasnt the performance upgrade, actually was the **** AHCI support on the SB710 that gave me just headaches with the SSDs i have tried (GSkill Evo 115GB and Vertex 3 120 GB). Since then the SSD works like a charm but with Intel RST the hard drive performance under AHCI loads (concurrent loads) its AWFUL. Just feels like the RST is tring to push to much data from the first thread (like in IDE mode) rather than ordering the requests to attend everything as fast as possible, and this actually never happened with the AMD platform, the hard drive in AHCI worked just fine.

Details from my old rig: Phenom II 955 (Deneb C3), 8 GB DDR2 800 XMS2, ASUS M3A78-EM (780G+SB710), MSI R6850 Cyclone, Gskill Phoenix EVO 115 GB and OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB (both troubly with the mobo on AHCI), CM Silent Pro M 500W, W7 Pro x64 with SP1, no OC.

Details from my updated rig: IB 3570K, 8 GB DDR3 1333 Kingston Value, ASUS P8H77-M PRO, MSI R6850 Cyclone, OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB, CM Silent Pro M 500W, W7 Pro x64 with SP1, Intel RST, no OC.

Let me know about any ideas! Thanks.

I presume you've gotten the latest version of RST. Have you checked that you're using the latest BIOS? Are you positive that your Vertex 3 is hooked up to a SATA 6 Gbps port and not a 3 Gbps?

What concurrent loads, exactly are you having problems with? Specific combinations would be helpful.

I have a Vertex 3 and RST drivers and I'm not experiencing the same issues, but I am mostly performing a single task at a time.

You're using RST with single drive? Why? I never used it for my single Crucial SSD - whatever Windows 7 installed by defaul works perfectly for me...

Yes i have installed both latest BIOS and RST. The Vertex3 is hook up to a 6 Gb SATA. The trouble isnt with the SSD but with the HDD. For example: if i start a copy from or to the HDD and try to navigate its content through explorer while its copying, each access to a dir in the HDD takes a few seconds (with the Phenom it was instant always).

I have installed Intel RST only because i thought it could bring me the maximum performance from the system, but if it keeps troubly ill go back to MS AHCI generic drivers.
