should I suggest a friend of mine to order? 24" or 18"? I use 18 because I'm in a midtower, but I don't know which case he has...

Well... our guess is as good as yours.

If only one device is being attached, 18" will do. If 2, then you might want to play it safe and go 24". Chances are 18" will be fine. I think the IDE spec has a max. cable length of 18" too, so keep that in mind.

Someone correct me on that number if I'm wrong.

yeah I think 18 is the max standard length. If you need to use 24" cables and it's possible to do this, putting the single drive on a 24" cable, and the other two on an 18" inch cable would probably be the best way to do it. My experience with cables that are past spec is that the drives tend to be more forgiving if there's only a single drive hooked up to the cable.

I would run 18" if you can, but 24" is okay if you need the length. You can also get 36", but I would not go with anything that long as data errors will start to get you when you go over the spec that high.

I'm using two 36" cables with no problems :P ...but they're wrapped in a silvery mesh, and only have one drive on each of them. Without the mesh, and with more drives attached you probably would encounter problems.

i use 24 inch cables for hard drives , and 32 inch cables for the CD-roms,
usually no problems, unless i use a scratched cd, then it may have a harder time reading the cd,
I also used 32 inch cables for hard drives as well , No problems either.

The cable quality , and the amount of devices connected,
1 instead of 2 make a difference.
