68pin SCSI vs. 80pin SCSI

im new to scsi so this is a very basic question. whats the difference between 68pin scsi and 80pin scsi interfaces? is on better then other? and if i had 68pin scsi do i really need the 80pin scsi adapter. Thanks in advance.

80 pin SCSI drives are meant for servers with hot-plug drive bays; the extra pins provide power and set the SCSI ID for the drive. Otherwise they're funtionally identical to their 68 pin counterparts.
If you're just looking for a SCSI drive for a workstation, get a 68 pin one. There are adapters for 80 pin drives, but some people have had problems with them.

There is only one real key difference:

68-pin drives are intended to be plugged into a cable, like with a desktop/workstation.

80-pin drives are designed to be plugged into hot-swap cages, like in servers with hot-swap drives.

Other than that the drives are identical.
