Make internal drive appear as a Samba share?

Postposted on Mon Apr 22, 2013 6:40 pm

Hiya-
In Windows XP, is there a way to make an internal drive appear to the host system as a Samba (network) shared drive?

We use some software at our shop that runs on a Windows XP box. It is designed to use a Samba share located on a server to store some frequently used files. It will not allow an internal drive to be selected to store these files, only a network drive. I would like to see if I can get better performance by using an internal drive instead, so I need to kinda trick it into believing an internal drive is a network share. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

You could access your own shares.

\\Computer-Name\ShareName

Where ShareName maps to a directory on the local drive.

Yup. You can even map a drive letter to it if the software requires that.

Well, you have to share that folder first so you can use the \\computer\share notation.

If he has admin privileges, then \\computername\driveletter$\folder\folder will work.
