Windows 8 3TB drive only Formats 2TB

Wed Oct 16, 2013 10:30 am

I just built a new machine with suggestions from the TR system building guide. It has 64bit Windows 8 with a primary SSD 250Gb, and a secondary 3TB HDD. The machine runs great, but the 3TB HDD is only available as a drive with a little over 2TB, the almost 1Tb left I cannot do anything with under Windows Disk Management tools. I know that previously there was a drive size limitation in windows, is this what I am running into?

Use GPT instead of MBR for the disk.

I am unfamiliar with the abbreviations you used GPT/MBR?

Since you have just created the partition, delete that in Disk Management, convert the disk to GPT, and then you can recreate a 3TB partition.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

FYI, OP in order to boot off that GPT partition, you are going to need some kind of boot loader that supports GPT. The boot loader used in older OS (Pre-Vista era) and classical BIOS do not support GPT.

Fortunately, GPT support is part of the UEFI spec. Most current RAID/Disk controllers support GPT booting in the event that you want to use a 3TIB+ HDD as a bootable device on an older system. There are also software-based solutions too (LILO/GRUB).
