IE Automatically Adds ".jpeg" Instead Of ".jp

Mon Aug 11, 2003 3:19 am

When I go to save a jpeg file in IE 6, it automatically adds ".jpeg" to the filename instead of ".jpg". This is an extremely annoying problem that never happened to me when I had Windows ME. Now I have XP and it's really getting to me. Has anyone else experienced this?

I use IE 6 and don't have this problem. JPEG files are saved as .jpg unless it's a JPEG file that was saved with the .jpeg extension. Either way it's the same thing.

Try this:

Choose My Computer
Click on the root of your main drive. (C:)
Choose View
Choose Folder Options
Choose File Types
Scroll until you find the first instance of an image file type; probably
JPEG Image.
Highlight and choose Edit
Notice "Default Extension for Content Type"
Select .jpg as the default.

Working through the file type list find all other instances that may
create/save a jpg and check them.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Okay! After continued looking, I found this. Although this addresses
a "jpe" extension, I believe it would work for "jpeg" too.

Edit the registry (regedit):

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg
"Extension"=".jpe"

Replace jpe with jpg, do a reboot.
