Windows 7 File Association

Postposted on Tue Nov 03, 2009 7:17 pm

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. I installed 7zip 64-bit and noticed that none of the files (.zip, .rar, etc.) were changed from their default to 7zip. I'm able to open them in 7zip if I right-click and select 7zip. But when I double click on them, it's like I never installed 7zip. I checked the file associations in 7zip and all the checkboxes were checked as I'd like. 7z files open with 7zip. What gives?
7zip isn't the only program doing this. I'm unable to point my video files to VLC or my audio files to Winamp. They all open in the default Windows Media Player. I can right-click->properties and change the 'opens with' option and it works but then I'd have to do that for every file format and that defeats the purpose of the 'select all' option in the programs file association menu.

Can anybody give me a solution?

Please
Thanks

I forgot if 7-zip has the "retake association" feature? If there is, try run 7-zip as admin and invoke that feature and see if the association sticks?

I don't know about Win 7, but in Vista I had to launch 7-zip as an admin to be able to configure file associations within the program. Otherwise clicking Select All and Apply would have no real effect.

I'm using the 7z and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, and it seems to be working fine.
I'm not running it as admin or anything.
So, like you inferred, I don't think it's a 7z problem, but more a local setting thing...I just can't seem to think what it might be.

Run the program as administrator once and reset the associations. If that fails, uncheck them all as admin and exit, then run as admin and check them all on again.

If that still fails, do it the manual way. [Winkey] "file association" [enter]

I tried to run 7zip as admin but that didn't change anything. I even tried to run this registry file posted on the 7zip forum but that didn't work either. *sigh*

Have you tried using Default Programs control panel app?

Did you remember to check the little "Always use this program" box when you are selecting from the "open with" menu?

The OP did not want to do this 20 times. He wanted to use the application's own shell integration feature and do all 7-zip recognizable files at once.

Apparently the registry file must have worked. It must have taken effect after a reboot. I guess I should reboot every time I make changes to the registry.

Zoomastigophora wrote:Have you tried using Default Programs control panel app?

That worked too! Thanks. I was able to associate all my audio files to winamp. However, VLC doesn't show up on the list of programs so I still have to figure that out. Maybe I'll just write another registry file.

Did you try what I posted above? If you set the associations manually, you can choose the program exe to associate files.

Weird, the file associations work for me, but what really bothers me is that the context menu option doesn't work with Windows 7 RC. I wonder if this is just because of the RC?

Doing it manually would have taken too long. The Default Programs thing sort of does the same thing anyway. I can choose what file types associate with what program. Kind of like the file association menu in 7zip but this is in Windows. Funny how this thing has probably been a part of Windows for years and this is the first time I've used. There's so much of the Windows OS I never touch.

You're welcome. When you bring up the Change Program dialog for a file type, you can manually browse for the executable you want to run. So in this case you would browse to wherever you have VLC installed. And I think it's bizarre, but funny, that you're comfortable modifying the registry by hand and using the most obtuse solutions possible instead of searching around the Control Panel . Try the search feature in Start Menu/Explorer sometime, it's amazing what sort of natural language its able to figure out and you'll probably discover easier ways to do things you've always wanted to do.
