On an old laptop, the kind were you exchange out the floppy drive for the Cd-Rom drive.

How would you do a clean install of Windows if you cant have both the floppy and Cd-Rom drive in at the same time?

The hard drive has been formatted, so all system files and cd-rom drivers will need to boot from the hard drive.

How can this be accomplished?

Format the HDD to be bootable from fdd, copy all cd drivers from fdd to hdd, switch fdd to cd, install.

I tried to format the HDD with the /s switch, so it would boot up from the HDD.

But the CD-Rom drivers that come with DOS, How do I get those to boot up from the HDD?


I tired copying all boot up files form the FDD to the HDD, but it did not work.

So I am sure that something else needs to be done for the Cd-Rom drivers to boot up from the HDD.

You'll need to edit CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT and change every reference to "A:" to say "C:".

Create a windows 98 rescue disk and make a bootable CD using it as the boot image. Better yet, make the CD a copy of your windows 98 CD.

It's likely that the cd drive isn't bootable. Speed's suggestion should get things working.

I will try Speed's suggestion tommorow, the laptop is at work and I did not bring it home with me.

But it does sound like it will work.
