Get a computer with Win98 or WinME, goto Control Panel --> Add Remove Programs and there's a tab for creating a bootdisk.

If you want to do it under 2k or XP, it will get ugly. You'll need 4 disks at least (if I recall correctly, either that or 6 disks). I can't recall how you're supposed to do it, but I know you need a few disks for it. I'm pretty sure you can copy the files from your Win2k or XP CD.

Hi. Erm, no, if you go to My computer, right click on the floppy icon and select format, you can then select an option which copies over system files, thus creates a bootable disk onto one floppy. On Win2000/XP it'll create a WinME bootable disk.

Yes pattouk, but that won't help very much I guess. I suppose he wants scandisk, attrib and some other commands so he can do anything after booting (hard disk doesn't work, partition ****, etc) ...
no sig

.....He asked how to make a bootup disk in Win2000, so I told him. If you copy HIMEM.SYS into CONFIG.SYS this will also allow for scandisk, etc.

"On win2000/XP it'll create a WinMe bootable disk." I don't run WinMe.

I just put my old cd drive onto the mobo, and insterted my W2K disk, all is well. Should have done it in the first place.....note to self, don't try to "build" a new comp while drinking.

You don't have to be running WinMe to use the bootdisk, it just gives you basic functions like format, fdisk and some other stuff. The bootdisk is just to get you to a command prompt so you can do some stuff.

If you wanted to install Windows (2k and above, not sure bout NT 4) you just put it in and it'll boot.

NTLDR is the bootloader for NT based windows.

Well, at least you got it working.

I find the 2k/XP boot disk too cumbersome(too many disks). Although I have a copy, I mainly use the 98 boot disk.

If you are reinstalling to a new drive, then just boot from the 98 disk and run 'setup.exe' from the CD-ROM.

Yeah, but you told him wrong. The "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" option is only in WinXP, not 2K

It was only a joke, and not about the bootdisk (most people don't even know what one is). It was about the thread title itself :) Sorry if I was misunderstood.

pattouk - XP does that, 2000 does not have that option. There is no way to make a DOS boot disk with 2000 alone.

technically you can make a boot disk from any windows, you just have to put in all the commands yourself.

Give this site a try. I've used his Network Boot Diskette for a while and I love it.
