Windows 7 Classpnp.sys hang

Postposted on Sat Apr 03, 2010 2:14 am

Has anyone had this issue? When I boot up in Windows 7 it hands on loading the Classpnp.sys file located in System32/drivers/. I haven't done anything yet to fix ti and a few forum posts were suggesting just moving the file or replacing it with another Classpnp.sys file, but I figured that you guys would be the experts on this sort of thing ;)

Try booting from your install CD's recovery console, then run "sfc /scannow", which should find and replace any damaged system files.

Failing that, yes, I'd try grabbing a known-good copy of the file from another computer & overwrite the bad one.
Think for yourself, schmuck!

Assuming it's not a hardware problem that is causing it to hang (have you changed any hardware, or any BIOS settings etc, prior to this happening? Have you run a memtest?)

sfc refuses to run under the windows dvd command prompt citing that there is a pending repair operation and that I should restart  , so I just replaced the Classpnp.sys file from the windows dvd.

Booted fine but after a few minutes of it in windows it would crash. Started up in safe mode and began to run sfc /scannow on the disk. Made it to 27%, hung, and then crashed.

Currently on the Windows DVD running chkdsk /r and it's found a few errors. I'll see if I can get it to boot again after this.

OK, looks like it's back up and running 100%. Did the check disk and true sfc scan in safe mode which went alright.

Thanks everyone.

edit: turns out my failing HDD/flaky motherboard SATA ports were causing some trouble as well. I gave the sata port a magic blow and now everything is hunky dory.
