Win 98SE or Win XP for gaming?

Mon May 12, 2003 12:54 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm about to format my gaming machine and I was wondering whether I should install Win 98 or Win XP. I would go for Win 98 cuz I think it has less overhead and seems less bulky but then again there might be an advantage in installing Win XP cuz of its new technologies and such. I would like to get your opinions on this.

Thanx,

The nice thing about XP is that if a game crashes, it will usually just go back to the desktop and not reboot. I like XP better for gaming, but 98 is less of a memory hog depending on how you set it up.

The only advantage Win98 has over WinXP for gaming is better support for older games. Some older Windows games just refuse to run on WinXP, but the majority of them run just fine. If you like playing older DOS games, Win98 is the way to go (better legacy support all around).

I have been running w2k professional for 2 years now without any real issues. That being said, sound does not work on older DOS based stuff (colonization, sc2, etc..) but there is a emulator called DOSBox that does emulate a DOS enviroment fairly well.

I really haven't had any issue with the few games I play on XP/2K. Both have been fine. A couple of older windows/DOS games have had issues, i.e. Warcraft II, Shogo. Other then that I've been able to get them all to work.

XP is faster, more stable than 98,what's more,98 has been out of MS's support both in drivers and softwares.

XP is nice, if you have more than 256MBs of memory. I have noticed a HUGE increase in games after my 512MB boost in XP, while 98SE was lacking just a little bit. But all around, XP is alot faster in general, and alot more stable.

It is lovely not having to reboot after every game crash....

really it depends on the system.

If you have alot of RAM, then go XP because XP manages large RAM size better overall.

If you have an older system or like to play older DOS games, then you should get 98, because XP dosent go well with DOS. Besides, 98 has much less system requirements than XP, so games will run better on older systems.

XP is definitely better in just about every category.

The only reason I would use 98SE instead would be if I had an older machine with a slower processor and a small amount of RAM. In that case 98SE is going to be a better choice just because it will use less memory and CPU.
