Boot.ini file within Windows XP OS

Postposted on Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:41 pm

Hello everyone,

I am wondering why I cannot find the boot.ini file in Windows XP. I am working on a friend's computer and it wouldn't boot due a weird boot manager that was on there. I went into the Recovery Console and reinstalled a new MBR...now it boots. I then ran the command bootcfg /rebuild and that worked. However, now it has two entries when starting up XP for the same partition...there is only one partition on the drive. Normally, I would just delete the boot.ini file then rerun the bootcfg command in recovery console to have one selection. When I go into Windows and run a search for boot.ini...it's not there! There was only a boot.ini.backup file, which I deleted. Now I have three entries in the boot manager when Windows starts. Where is it getting the info for three entries, if I cannot find the boot.ini file?

Thanks,

Trellot

You can edit the file if you right-click on My Computer->properties->advanced->startup and recovery->settings.

I guess the only other question I have is why I could not find the boot.ini file anywhere? Weird!

In Explorer you'd need to go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) and uncheck it. Then you'll see it in C:\>.

Boot.ini is a hidden protected operating system file. You need to open a Windows Explorer windows and go to Tools>Folder Options>View then uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'

Damn you, Capt. Ted! Foiled again!
