Window 7 homegroup working in DLNA ?

Postposted on Sat Jun 04, 2011 4:25 am

Hi team,

I'm trying to setup a DLNA environment and initial start with my pc which enable file sharing among all window 7 laptop/desktop / Ipad/iphone too.

Is there any solution out there ? or shall i stick with FREENAS to host all music/video ?

Homegroup is more like an Active Directory domain without a domain controller. Nothing much to do with DLNA. If you intend to share your media files from a Windows 7 box, Media Sharing is what you need to enable. It is a pretty decent DLNA option (as least as far as my PS3 is concerned). If you want general file sharing, especially crossing platforms with the Apple stuff, then you still need to make sure regular SMB/CIFS file sharing is configured properly. In that case I am not sure how homegroup reacts with devices that are not part of the group.

if you want maximum flexibility, then you need to run a full feature OS like *nix/Windows on the box.
