Cant install windows vista service pack 2 (64bit)

Fri Nov 04, 2011 2:07 pm

So, as the topic implies, I am having trouble with 64bit vista and service pack 2. Every time I try and run it, it goes through a long preparing phase, and then gives me this error:
"Error: ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED(0x80070422)"
The .exe file I'm using to install it is "Windows6.0-KB948465-X64.exe" and no, windows updater doesn't have service pack 2 (that's why I'm using the download).

Honestly not sure what I'm doing wrong, nor do I know how to enable the service....

Thanks in advance for all assistance.

Maybe it bothers him to shell out more money for something that really should've been a free service pack?

How so? Microsoft could've called Win7 a Vista service pack, and not charged for it. They really should have, after forcing people to deal with the "EPICFAIL" that was Vista.

The majority of "EPIC FAIL" experiences in Windows Vista 64-bit were due to horrible buggy drivers from NVidia. Don't blame Microsoft for that. Once the third-party hardware ODMs finally got around to making decent Vista drivers, it was a quite functional OS.

Yeah, so how about keeping the discussion on topic and trying to help the OP? This topic ought to be split.

On topic: have you verified the md5 sum of the service pack installer, or simply re-downloaded it and tried again? Do you have SP1 installed already?

You could try opening a command prompt as an administrator and running "sfc /scannow" to make sure your system files are OK.

Maybe you've got some bad RAM. Could try doing a memtest or pop out one of the RAM sticks and see if it installs successfully.

That's certainly worth a try... but that thread is about Win7 not Vista, and this error message apparently has multiple possible causes, so no guarantees.

I would:
1 - Verify you are on SP1
2 - Verify you are up to date on all other MS patches
3 - Update to the latest NIC and chipset drivers (I recall some SPs being blocked due to bad\old drivers)
4 - Runs the SFC utility as recommended previously
5 - Run the system update readiness tool (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821)

Edit: Oh, we have also seen where antivirus (mostly AVG) would fail the install (even when disabled). If we uninstalled the AV it increased the odds of getting the SP installed (and then simply reinstalling back afterwards).
Your bargaining posture is highly dubious.

Ah, yeah, could be bad NIC drivers that introduce errors into downloads. I've had that bite me once or twice and had to download a big patch on a different computer.

If it's a Realtek or Intel NIC[1], download the driver straight from them and not from whomever made your motherboard or NIC.

[1] I'd be astonished if Intel put out such a bad driver.

Mass reply: I did the system 32 scan, but it didn't change anything, I removed AVG, nothing changed. I'm not using an intel, I am up to date on all windows updates.

I will check my NIC drivers tomorrow.

I just tried the system readiness tool (Windows6.0-KB947821-v15-x86.msu) and it said this update does not apply to my system.

And for some reason I can't find an update for my drivers. so... I'm assuming they're up to date.

The x86 in the filename leads me to believe that's a 32bit version. See if there is an x64 version out there.

He clicked the first link in the previous support article. The second link has the x64 package.

All supported x64-based versions of Windows Vista

You haven't done any sort of "tweaking" to the services of the box have you? Disabling services through msconfig or manually after reading some guide on a website?

In the very first post, the OP says that Windows Update doesn't list Service Pack 2. That strikes me as very odd.

Right... now I'm confused.... I thought x86 meant it was for a 64bit device...
If that was my problem....
Also, I have not modified anything through msconfig, other than to re-enable a file that somehow got disabled (entirely my fault)

so, slightly off topic question: why is that in my C drive, I have three different program files folders? Program files, Program files (x86), and program files (x86)(x86)? The first two make sense now, but the third....

Yes, it is. Reading comprehension fail on my part.

If the machine thinks SP2 is not installed, but Windows Update doesn't list it, something rather strange is going on. It may be time for a wipe and re-install.

Nope, x86 means 32-bit.

Yup, that third one definitely does not belong. What's in it (folder names)?

IMO weird crap like this is just further reason to go with a wipe and reinstall... something is corrupted.

The System Update Readiness Tool (checksur) will fix the software distribution point for Windows/Microsoft Update, which in turn may prevent the need for a wipe and load.

If for some reason that fails:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

This KB article has a full to do list for fixing the distribution point, which will also step you through making sure all the appropriate services are in fact enabled.

The Program Files (x86)(x86) though is more than a little unusual. I'm curious if anything resides in that folder. That could be due to some 3rd party application installer screw up though. Again, not necessarily enough to warrant a wipe and load.

It seems unlikely given that the sfc /scannow didn't find any integrity issues. Nonetheless, might want to make sure that AVG hasn't let an infection slip by.

Hmmm... The x64 sys readiness tool did indeed install something... so i'm going to restart and see what it did.

Inside the (x86)(x86) file is a file for a lexmark printer.
regardless, that file has been there since I got rid of said printer, a year and a half ago.

Anyways, now that I realize that x86 is for a 32bit system, I may have just been trying to install the wrong SP2... gonna try that now as well.

Navigate to here:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Double click the CheckSUR.log file.

Paste the contents here between

tags.

Search for a Svcpack.log and do the same.

You should also find a WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows directory. Same thing, paste the contents between code tags.

We'll see if it gives a more helpful error to work with.

Re: Cant install windows vista service pack 2 (64bit)

Sun Nov 06, 2011 7:17 pm

Yeah, that pretty much settles it. Something did serious damage to your install.

This is what an ideal checksur.log looks like:

=================================
Checking System Update Readiness.
Binary Version 6.1.7601.21645
Package Version 13.0
2011-10-30 16:59

Checking Windows Servicing Packages

Checking Package Manifests and Catalogs

Checking Package Watchlist

Checking Component Watchlist

Checking Packages

Checking Component Store

Summary:
Seconds executed: 201
 No errors detected

Your CheckSUR.log reports that all the errors were corrected. Despite that the SP2 file is still choking. I'm not normally one to rush into a wipe and load, but 1448 errors is serious business.

I'm a little shocked that the "sfc /scannow" didn't find any errors.

All the remains at this point is a handful of choices.

1:
a. chkdsk c: /f /r
b. Virus scan with the Safety Scanner & MBAM
c. Doing all Eleven Applicable Steps in this support article. Remember some do not apply to Vista (they will state as such as you read the directions).

2:
a. Windows Transfer Tool to migrate your profile data off the machine.
b. Refresh the install of Windows Vista on the machine.
