Windows 7 Upgrade .ISO

So, I'm pretty sure this laptop I'm trying to upgrade to windows 7 from Vista has a bad dvd drive in it. I'm resorting to using a usb thumb drive as the OS install media. I know you can download the full windows 7 .iso images but what about the upgrade only .iso's? I tried to use my external dvd drive but it won't play nice as a boot device either :(

This page may be of some help:

I think as long as the setup routine can detect Vista on the hard drive you should be good to go.
