Weird Issue

Wed Jul 24, 2013 4:11 am

Hello all,

I've re-installed windows 8 64 and the pc as a weird behavior now. Maybe some program or driver I installed is causing it. When I press shutdown the pc starts to shut but then for 1 second it looks like its powering up again, and then really shuts down.
The sound looks like fans spinning (maybe the GPU or CPU I don't now).

Anyone care to help?

Thanks

are you using display port? i have an issue like this that seems to be caused by power over the DP line to my GPU. Wouldn't explain the change at the time of OS change though, of course...

Using HDMI. Yes, I doesn't explain it. Maybe some new drivers maybe?

Is the only symptom that makes you think that the PC is trying to start up again the fact that the fans spin up? Does everything on the screen look normal?

Screen is normal, black as it is supposed to be when powering off...

How many fans spin back up? Do they reverse direction when they come on the 2nd time just before full power-down?

The ones I ear are probably from the GPU. I can't tell if they are spinning in reverse...

Sounds like the driver is no longer controlling the gpu fan.

My older Geforce 560 GTX would do the same on post or in the bios until windows booted up and loaded the driver then you could hear the fan quite down. On shutdown you would hear the fan ramp up to fixed speed until the power supply switched off.

Built in protection within the graphic card bios for when no operating system/driver is running to control fan speed.
It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

Could be the new version of Nvidia drivers then?

Opening the case and LOOK INSIDE generally helps. How do you expect to solve a problem if you don't know the culprit?

If you want to explore the graphics driver as a possibility, you can easily go to Nvidia's site and install the previous driver. If the fan problem goes away, the answer is yes.

Yes generally helps. Although as all fans are spinning its difficult to be sure its the GPU. But thanks anyway i'll try the drivers.

It was the beta Bios I was using. Changed the board (bricked with a new bios) to an ASUS and no problems so far.
